i was talking to a guy today that was looking into one of his older friends estate. he told of some of the family dearching the house and finding 1000 silver dollarsstill wrapped . they took them to the bank to cash them in . they were told that they could only give face value for the silver dollars. and the people accepted tha and cashed them in. some one made a nice profit on that deal.
that would just be a dream come true... my nightmare would be for that to happen, and i would work at a bank .. the bank across the street from the other bank the notes were cashed in at .... it does happen, but none to often!
If I were ever to work at bank..they would think I was sniping the place for a hit! I would be in evey bill/note drawer there was and looking over every tellers shoulder! I would never get any work done and would spend my salary and be forced to live in the safe!! What a dreamer huh???:smile:smile:smile RickieB
Man! That's enough to make you really want to run over to some banks and put in an application! Wonder what "still wrapped" means. Man. Phoenix
thats sad what some people cash in. i imagine there was some key or semi key date morgans in those rolls! :headbang:
Where's the common sense There had to some beauties in that mini hoard. Sometimes I wonder how people can not know any better. You would think that being told they wouldn't be given more than face value means they :loud:ARE WORTH MORE THAN FACE VALUE! Bruce
He probably had a little $$ before he died and the family was just seeing $$ signs and didn't really care about the extra value of the coins or the guy that told the family was hoping to get the coins for face or free beings that he knew the deceased:whistle:
they were silver and i was told that he had over 1 million in checking , single, no kids , just gready relatives.
I know it is isn't the same thing, but in Spain you can still change in the Bank (Banco de España) the old banknotes in Pesetas to the new euro ones. Every month they change millions of dollars. There are some people that take some dated on mid S.XX, maybe almost uncirculated to get the face value. So I have proof some collectors stay in the queue to convince people to give them the banknotes so that they give them back a little more than face value. In fact, the collector value for them is usually not much more, so it is a fair trade, but sometimes they get good surprises.
It happens more than people know. I remember some years back talking at work about coins. One person said he didn't know there was a value to any coins. He had a big jar of dimes his parents gave him for a wedding present that they had from when they were kids. He took them to a bank. $1,200.00 worth of dimes. Occationally I have breakfast with seveal people in the neighborhood. I usually leave a few half dollars for tips. One of the other people at our table produced a pile of Walker Halves and asked me if they were worth anything. He said he has been dumping them at the bank for years. Used to have thousands of them. During a construction site a worker was finding many old coins from back in the 20's. Took them all to a bank and had some rejected so he threw them away. Thought they were fakes or kids money. Can you imagine coins with 2's or 3's or even a big 5 on them? Happens way to often.
