Got some info: sold at the 1940 FUN show by dealer Ira Reed for $4 a pair, and now can go up to $700 for a set, and not mint made. They caused a sensation and many still believe that they may have actually been reeded in the Philly mint for Mr. Reed due to the quality of the reeding and his connections there. But not really

Yea there is some debate as to whether the US mint actually did these OR a 3rd party. I beleive the US mint has denied allegations.
