I got this in the mail a couple days ago, and I've been puzzling over what is going on with the obverse. I realize it's certainly a low grade piece, to be expected for the price, and my best guess is that it has been stripped of patina at some point and has toned down with age. However, what is the 'layer' that is visible around the edges of the reverse? It looks like metal pealing away, but I'm not sure how that is possible. Is the overall softness from wear, or is the authenticity questionable? The edges are very smooth as well, with no signs of a seam or any filing etc.

6g, 18mm, 300-264 BC; probably minted in Sardinia, similar to SNG Cop 144

Some coins from old collections were varnished. If you want you could try a bit of acetone on it.

I think that defect is created during the process of melting and pouring the copper in the mold making a non smooth planchet.
