It's always tough finding Claudius in silver when you're on a budget. Even if you're not on a budget they just don't turn up too often. I was fortunate enough to win this one below at the last Roma E-43 auction. Double portrait drachm from Cappadoccia featuring Nero and the Divine Claudius. The bonus is it has Latin legends paired with wonderful eastern portraits. Nero with Divus Claudius NERO CLAVD DIVI CLAVD F CAESAR AVG GERMA Laureate head of Nero right DIVOS CLAVD AVGVST GERMANIC PATER AVG Laureate head of Divus Claudius right. Caesarea, Cappadocia 63-64 AD 2.95g RPC I 3648; RIC 622. EX-Roma E-Sale 43 Lot 334 http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-144261 Let's see either your silver Claudii or your double portrait denarii.
Wow Jay, that is a fantastic coin. I love that so much of the original legend is still visible. I happen to have a denarius with both Claudius and Nero. Claudius, with Nero as Caesar. 41-54 AD. Glad you got one finally. The only complaint I would say is Claudius side looks exactly like Nero where other Drachms can look more like the Claudius we see on other coins.
NERO AR Drachm OBVERSE: NERO CLAVD DIVI CLAVD F CAESAR AVG GERM, laureate head of Nero right. REVERSE: DIVOS CLAVD AVGVST GERMANIC PATER AVG, Claudius' laureate head right Struck at Caesarea, Cappodocia, 63/4AD 3.6g, 17mm RIC 621, RSC 3, RPC 3648
Thanks Mat. Nero does have the chubbier face on this one while Claudius' is elongated but I love the Eastern style, not as finely perfected as Rome's. Nice one Bing!
Superb coin in every way. I like how the portraits look fairly similar, except one is older than the other!
Terrific acquisition, Jay! You're probably all sick of seeing my Claudius AR Cistophorus every time a Claudius posting occurs, but here it is again...
Awesome work Jay GT4, here is my double-faced tet which I was looking for: Nero-Claudius (looks much much better in hand)
