Recently I purchased a new Jeep and my coining time was reduced in order to play with my new toy. So, I'm still getting caught up from my backload of January coins. I can't believe I let this beauty sit in the mailer for so long. It's a stunner. Titus AR Tetradrachm, 12.61g Alexandria mint, 79-80 AD RPC 2463 (12 spec.). Obv: AYTOK TITOY KAIΣ OYEΣΠAΣIANOY ΣEB; Head of Titus, laureate, r. Rev: OMONOIA; Homonoia seated, l., with olive branch; date LB to l. Acquired from Praefectus Coins, January 2018. The first issue of Alexandrian tetradrachms for Titus were struck in regnal year 2, 29 August 79 - 28 August 80. They are not as plentiful as the regnal year 3 tetradrachms, perhaps indicating their production began in mid 80 and continued into the following regnal year. Three reverse types were initially coined for Titus - Euthenia, Homonoia, and Sarapis, none of which are carry-overs from Vespasian's tetradrachm issues. Butcher and Ponting have found Titus' tetradrachms were struck with near 19.5% silver fineness from recycled metals, consistent with the earlier issues minted for Vespasian. A superb portrait of Titus, one of the best I've seen from this mint. Feel free to post your Titus or Alexandrian coins!
Stunner is an understatement. That is a fantastic tet. I'm afraid I don't have anything that comes close to the beauty of your nice and big Alexandria Tet, just this budget imperial Titus.
'Budget', perhaps. But that is a rare denarius, RIC 692. A double die match with my own example (Ex Sneh), indicating how few dies were prepared for the type! Nice catch.
Rare sounds nice considering I got it for about $50. I forget which auction it was, but it drew no interest from anyone, so I snapped it up with a few seconds to go. Had no idea it was rare at all, I just wanted a decent Titus portrait.
Nice one, David! He's got a snarl to rival Caracalla. So far I have only one Titus from Roman Egypt, and you've seen it before. EGYPT, Alexandria. Jeep Renegade. Rolled off the assembly line in November 2017. I thought about getting a Wrangler, but decided on something a bit more practical and fuel efficient that was also 4 wheel drive. Some have nicknamed the Renegade 'Toaster Jeep'.
Nice Jeep! I recently bought a Wrangler myself. It is fun, but not practical nor fuel efficient(15mpg for my driving). You almost have to have a second car if you drive long distances.
I bought the Renegade as a daily driver and do not plan on going off road. It basically will be a mall crawler which hopefully will tackle the occasional snow storm. Still, it isn't as cool as Vespasian's ride! Vespasian AR Denarius, 3.23g Antioch mint, 72-73 AD RIC 1559 (C). BMC 512. RSC 643. RPC 1931 (9 spec.).
