I came across this copper. It is obviously completely screwd up :) It is suppose to be a braided hard large one cent. My question is - how did a coin like this come to be - is it someone practicing making fakes OR is it some type of planchet error or something done by the mint? I was thinking it may also be done by the mint for testing out copper planchets. If so - any value? Thanks in advance photos below!

the design is sunk into that 'coin'?! i think it was just something someone used to press the design into another object. I could be wrong, but it looks like what you have is a blob of something, with a design pressed into it.

looks like someone pressed the coin against some piece of metal .

As others have already pointed out, it's a "hammer job" (a.k.a., "vise job", "squeeze job"). A copper disc was sandwiched between two large cents and the threesome was squeezed together or hit with a hammer. You've got the middle of the sandwich.

Just make sure you use the word RARE twenty or thirty times.
