I have found many in circulation in the past, that I cannot tell which one is the oldest now. The only one that stands out, was when I found many coins in a creek back in the 1950's. It was a 1875s twenty cent coin, that started me collecting. Besides Stone Mountain halfs, shield nickles, buffalo, flying Eagles, Indian head cents, and several others then.
1899 ihc. I’ve gotten or seen a few in circulation. Most recent was a 1936 buffalo nickel a couple years ago. Got a 1910 wheat about the same time. Haven’t gotten any silver in a couple years either. I used to fairly often and I always could tell the second I got it
Got this in change from the gas station down the street last year- I was pretty happy imagining the journey it took. Mintage: 6,630,000
Of all places it was WENDY's where I got an 1890's Barber Dime in my change that made the spiral slide down the little slide thingy. That was exciting and of course the cashier was clueless.
I'm a bank teller, and I took in an 1867 3-cent nickel in a deposit about 3 years ago. The customer must have either mistaken it for a dime (same size and color as modern clad dimes) or else didn't know what it was and thought he was pulling a fast one over on me.
Just a few minutes ago I found a 1940D Jeff nic in a roll of nickels. I'd like to ask a sort of reverse question. When was the last time you got a 2009P or 2017P nickel, either in change or in a roll of nickels? Some sideboards: You must be west of Philly, at least a day's drive. I've gone thru about 3000 Jeff nickel rolls and have yet to find a 2009P or 2017P in either the rolls or in any change. I know why the 2009 nickels (and dimes) are hard to find, but I'm at a loss to explain the lack of 2017P nickels. I'm getting to the point that I may break down and ask my daughter to bring a few rolls of nickels with her when she comes and visits the next time. She lives in eastern VA. This is very frustrating. I have many 2015P and 2016P in rolls and change, but no 2017P. :-( On another rare nickel topic. Has anyone found the spear through the bison westward nickel?
