So I picked up this 1887 Morgan Dollar the other day. When I told the dealer I was interested in it, he looked it over and said "Hmmm, this looks like it could be PL." I smiled and said it has a shot. Once I got it home and gave it a quick bath to rinse some of the gunk off of it, the surfaces really came alive. If it turns out to be a DMPL, it will be my first DMPL pick out of the wild.

I'm interested in your opinions on what you think it might grade? It's going to be taking a trip to either California or Florida in it's near future. I have an idea of what I might think it is, just want to get other opinions first. :)

Here are some still images so you can see the surfaces.

Here are a couple of videos that show the mirrors. (I am wearing a glove this time.) ;)

Why isn't there a "details" option?

I think 62 and toss up between PL or DMPL. Is the stuff on the "STA" in states on the reverse just toning? If the mirrors stop at whatever that is is it enough to prevent a PL designation? (I don't know the answer just curious).

I was thinking 64, maybe 65 PL atleast. Possibly DMPL but you know how hard that is to determine from photos.
I do have concerns about the haze spot, but that doesnt always impede the visibility.
I didnt watch the video, but if you havent already , stick a newspaper up there and see if you can read it at 3"

You can list a details grade if you would like. Just put it in the comments. :)

Well they are both the same coin. Now that I am looking at it, it really is blue looking. I'll have to re-image the coin as well as calibrate my monitor again. I guess that's what happens when I try to shoot and edit something at 2:00AM. I didn't look it over again until you mentioned it. LOL

Proper DPL mirrors on a Morgan are sure pretty. I voted 63 DPL. Good luck with the TPG's.

I think it has a chance at MS 63 DMPL, but it could also go details on a bad day (hopefully not though).

I actually want to say au 58 as it looks like there’s just enough rub and luster breaks on the hair. But without seeing in hand it’s almost impossible to call If it’s ms I’m at 63 pl

Well my graphics card died on me tonight. That might explain some things. Thankfully I had a back up on hand and got it installed. So here is a better rendition color wise on the still image.

Yeah the haze is a bit of a ugly spot on the reverse.

I can read newsprint from a distance of 12 inches on the reverse and around 10 inches on the obverse.

    I think it's a tossup between 63DMPL & 64PL.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I'd grade it 63, and I'd say it has a pretty good shot at DPL. It is clearly better than an average PL.

For everyone saying details, what are you seeing that I'm not?

I voted 63 Dmpl, and think it could possibly go 64. The mirrors abruptly show any and all field imperfections. I can't find find anything that says a details grade. Nice Pick @jtlee321

PL's and DMPL's really show flaws much easier and much more prominently than normal surface coins. I'm happy with his coin and I will be sending it in in the near future. I do appreciate all of your opinions and comments. :)
