Well.... Depends on your definition of old. I still get childlike giddy when a wheat cent turns up in my change. And that still happens to me a couple times a year. Twice in the last five years I received silver quarters in my change. Can’t say I have ever received any outdated change like Mercs or buffalo’s.... However I did see a thread last week where a bank employee was showing quite an array of obsolete really cool stuff..... It’s not uncommon for a family to dispose of their deceased grandmothers old jewelry box change by simply spending it because they don’t know what else to do with it. So, yes it does happen. Keep your eyes peeeled!

An 1841 dime received by a friend in change at a fast food restaurant about 20 years ago. He gave it to me.

When I started collecting coins, Morgan dollars circulated. I was proud to find 1879-S coins...they were most common along with 1880-Ss and 1881-Ss. I needed Movie money so they all got spent.

No joke - an Indo Greek tetradrachm of Hermaios I ca. 90-70 BC. Mistaken for a quarter!

Nothing really notable, but I was impressed to find a very nice looking 1930D LHC in a Coinstar hopper last week. That's the same machine where I had found a Mercury dime a few weeks ago (1942).

Edit: It is also the very same machine where I found a 1962D and 1963D quarter on different visits to that Walmart... all within the last month.

I found a 1909 VDB with much of its luster this past Aug 2017. I believe Randy A. in his comment previously nailed the reason.

1895 V nickel coin roll hunting last year. As a kid Morgan's circulated, I got many 1880's from the bank.

Even as a kid, I never found anything in circulation older than an 1909 Lincoln cent.....

I've got a couple of shield nickels I found roll searching many years ago. 1868 and 1872 if I recall correctly.

The oldest coin I received in change was a no dated worn out shield nickel.

I found a 1905 Indian Head in a roll of pennies a couple of months ago. The Indian Head was the end penny in a bank rolled roll of pennies - At first glance I thought I'd seen an old Canadian. I didn't found out I was wrong until I looked at the last penny in the roll.

I found a 1927 Buffalo nickel in a box of nickels just two days ago. The Buffalo fooled me for a few seconds; I thought it was one of the Westward Bison coins.

Both finds caused a little pump of adrenaline.

I have never found an IHC in change and have been looking since the 1950's. I did get a V nic in change in NYC once.
