Has any one heard of a New Hamphire Quarter with no P mint mark? A person showed me one today that had no P. I looked at it under a 15X loop and couldn't see any alteration. Wierd.....
Sounds like a greased die or something to that effect. Could you post a pic? Normally greased dies don't carry a premium, unless they are pretty neat or dramatic. That one might catch a premium. I think I remember a report on some quarters that say "In God we Rust" and that's from a greased die I think. But, can't really say yours is withough a pic, would you be able to post one? Phoenix
The NH quarter is known for this. I had one and I sold it for a few dollars. I think the mintmark was the main thing that was filled with grease for that state. Speedy
Sorry, I can't post a picture..Thanks all for your help. It must be a filled or greased die as you are saying.
Most every state quarter has some spot on it which for some reason tends to frequently fill with grease. For DE it was the E in STATE, for CT it was the middle part of CHARTER OAK, for the NH it was the mintmark. The no mntmark NH quarter has been reported frequently ever since they were being struck.
I believe mint marks are added to the master dies now. If a real no mint mark coin turned up it would probably be extremely common. (it's also extremely unlikely).
There is no sign of a mint mark on the coin. I am going to mail it to ANACS on Monday if were not snowed in..I will let you know the result when it comes back. ED
I wouldn't send it to ANACS. Unless it is really, really high grade. The grease filled die "error" won't help the value enough to pay for grading. Speedy
You know it's grease filled because with the method of die manufacture today - there are no dies with missing mint marks.
More on this saga...It's on it's way to ANACS..I showed it around at our bi-monthly coin club meeting last night. Several dealers looked at it, and advised me to send it out...There will me more when it comes back in about 2-3 weeks.
The mintmarks are on the original model that the master hub is made from. The only way you can have a true missing mintmark since 1990 is if the mintmark were to somehow chip off one of the working hubs. And if that happed there wouls still be a rough, and I mean rough as in rugged, "outline" of the mintmark visible.
As you know I sent it to ANACS. The big day is coming soon. Should be back in a week or so..Any predictions?
It will come back Grease Filled die-- The dealers who suggested that it be sent away should chip in and pay for the grading cost IMHO. Speedy
