I found this penny while looking through some other pennies. The surface looks all rough and gritty gut its actually very smooth and not gritty to the touch. I don't understand what happened?

Simple.. It's a Copper Plated Cent with Environmental Damage
Looks like a Beach Sand find..

But.. Both sides clearly show exposed areas in the Copper coating and exposed zinc.. This is a damaged Cent.. Last time I say it.. NOT A MINT ERROR

Please allow me to turn your query around - how could this be a mint-produced error?

Why that's easy Kurt. It's from Philly and someone was allowed to bring in a rock tumbler to play with on breaks.

Wow, asked and answered. Thanks. Charles Morgan from Coinweek keeps asking me to do a podcast with him at each show. If he asks again at Dallas, I think I will.

    Good. :)

Don't be afraid to share your thoughts and/or ask questions if something isn't making sense. There's no shame in being wrong, and by doing so you'll almost certainly learn faster than if not engaging and/or questioning what you're told.
