Here is my last remaining inventory of uncleans, hadn't had a chance to go through them and attribute some of the buggers. Lots of culls, too, from the looks of it. Pretty much all LRBs from the visible portraits, and many FTR types...
So you just happened to find that beauty amongst that lot of uncleaned coins while everyone else missed it? Seems legit. Definitely no Photoshop. On a serious note, I hope they turn out good. Can't wait to see the results.
I got the bag from crustyromans.com, which stopped selling hoards last year. I think this batch is one of the last ones they sold. I think nobleromancoins.com is still selling them and there is always eBay, which I would consider to be a last resort.
Quite a change from some years ago, when these were sold by the pound at the wholesale level. Some years back I saw a supermarket cart filled with bag after bag of uncleaned coins. I never could understand how seller could be absolutely certain there was nothing in there of substantial value - have ever heard of a spectacular find in a group of uncleaned?
The claim with one of the vendors is that they never picked through the lots to pull anything out of higher value. But that didn't stop the original discoverers/sources from doing so I imagine. About the most exciting things I found were an antoninianus of Macrianus and a denarius of Septimius Severus, plus a few rare late roman types and a smattering of Byzantines and two prutahs of Judaea.
Maybe he didn't, but his assistant probably did, which would make his claim still technically accurate. I'm always skeptical about those claims.
I remember! This is a great site - I plan on posting a bunch of coins here that I have questions about. I like the beagle!
I found a Caligula As in a batch of uncleaned coins but it's going back about 15 years or so...wish I had the before picture. Could probably be cleaned a bit more on the reverse.
I forgot to mention I am no longer buying uncleaned coins but just trying to upgrade those portraits I do have and filling out the list of every emperor and significant usurper.
