Help with a US Large Cent - massive error or post mint damage?

    Looks like an ancient coin!

    Could of been a clamshell lamination. Someone pulled it apart to much and the layer broke off.

    I would agree that it looks like a large lamination that has been removed long ago. Would have been a sight to see in the 1830's to '50s.

    That was a clamshell lamination that was "helped" by someone who didn't know it was better off left as-is.
