This is the first professionally graded coin I purchased back in the 1980’s. I don’t remember when NGC and PCGS began with slabbed grading. This Morgan is graded by IGA (Independent Grading Service). This holder is no more than a glorified flip. Can’t say I have seen any other coins graded like this. Would this be recognized as an accurately graded Morgan in this age of slabbed grading services? If not, I’m going to lose this package. It’s unruly and doesn’t fit any storage I have.

Based on the examples ive run across,.(mostly silver dollars) the coins all seemed to be on par with what they would recieve at a tpg nowadays. With maybe 10% that looked like they would upgrade a point

Condor will know for sure but I believe PCGS did the same thing in the very beginning. Is that a soft flip?

Keep it or sell it and get a new coin. There’s a lot of collectors that would be interested in something like that for the early grading “slab” alone.

David Hall did something similar which is considered the predecessor to PCGS starting

@Conder101 can give you more information about the company. He might even be able to tell you if older certs like this carry a premium.

A premium?? Serious?? Well the way my OCD (or whatever you call it) works.... I don’t seem to possess the ability to sell a coin once I purchased it. It’s a problem with the wife. I don’t have issue with being a coin hoarder though

There are people who collect slabs and certs. It's another area of collecting like people who collect numismatic books and journals. Condor even wrote a book about slabs and certs.

Same here, but my wife knows:
    -- my collection has value
-- I intend to go to the Great Beyond with the collection intact
-- who to contact to turn the collection into cash.

Based on eBay results, I would guess that this particular example would sell for above 64 money but below 65 money (likely in the $65-$85 range).

Here is some info from Conder from another forum:

“IGA was a short lived service from the mid 80's located in Atlanta GA. In my notes I have that it was possibly owned by Robert Cornley and Shelly Schultz. If BStrauss has one dated Jun of 1985 that would be the earliest one I have heard of. The earliest I have seen was dated 1/9/86 and the latest one was 4/24/87. So we are talking 1 1/2 to 2 years in operation. And I have only seen the one variety of certificate. I have seen them in that vinyl wallet with the certificate in the pouch and the coin in the other pouch, but I suspect that may be an aftermarket packaging because I have seen that same wallet with other phptocertificates. I have also seen the certificate, coin and that green paper with the logo sealed into a single three pocket vinyl "sheet" with all three items sealed into their own pocket. That I think might have bee the way they were originally packaged.”
