Heres a way to get old coins and errors.Aside from rolls from the bank. When you get a soda from the vending machine when your done, simply place a coin in the slot and press the coin return. Certain ones will give you a different coin each time, so just press and check and do it all over again(not meaning to buy another soda) until you get somthing good. I tried it myself and got a 1941S nickel. But somtimes if you do it too many times it gives you the same coin. Hope you all find somthing good.

That would work, but id rather take my chances at the bank than sit in front of a vending machine all day.

Around here a security camera would alert the authorities and result in arrest if you stood in front of the vending machine that long. I suppose you could tell them you were drunk, thought it was a slot machine, and was pretty happy because you just about broke even.

When I was a young numismatist, I used to get a lot of older coins out of vending machines to fill my book and actually got a clipped planchet quarter and a struck by capped die nickel out of the machines!

When my wife is shopping at walmart, I almost always bring my quarters and SACS and feed the postal machine there. You put in $0.25 or a SAC and then buy the .02 stamp. Ok. You lose some money, but you get change back. If you put a quarter in, you get nickels and pennies. BOTH are worth keeping.

They might have cameras monitoring that, but what the heck are they going to charge you with? Besides GEEKINESS??

Consider yourself lucky. My experience is that a great amount of vending machines will not return any change at all. It is very common to put money in a vending machine and get nothing and loose your money as well. One place I used to work had a box next to the vending machine area for your complaint papers of loosing money due to it happening a great deal of time. I've lost a great deal at motel machines and no one to complain to either. Motel cleark just says DUH, I don't know. At the place I purchased my car they now have free coffee right next to a coffee vending machine. I asked why and was told way to many customers loosing money on the machine so not to get customers ticked off and not buy a car, just give them free coffee. I would consider this attempt to find a decent coin about the same as finding one on the ground.

i did this one time while we were on vacation. there was 2 soda machines and a snack machine sitting down a stair case at a hotel. i stood there about 20 minutes puting nickels in and hitting coin out. i had a black sharpie, so i would put a black dot on the coin so i would know when i'm getting my coin back. ended up with a 1969S nickel. not much but still neat!:kewl: and one time there was this snack machine with choclate donuts i wanted really bad. the machine only took coins which was very weird becuase it was newer. so there was this coke machine that was set at $1.25. i put a dollar in thinking i would get 4 quarters in change. hit the coin out, and what do you know? the use exact change only light was flashing. had to put another dollar in and buy a soda. didn't get my donuts becuase they were a dollar, and i only had 75 cent in quarters. sometimes vending machines are frustrating. other than that, i haven't really found much. i'd still rather go to the bank though.

It much easier (and likely with better results) to make friends with a bank teller (store clerk, etc.) or two. They see lots of coins, and they do the work for you. They are not allowed to make you pay more than face. It doesn't hurt to take them an occasional gift, say a fruit basket or veggie tray or something similar, say, during the holidays as a token of appreciation. Show them some odd/old coins or currency occasionally to keep your interests on their minds. I've gotten many a star note, silver certificate, Morgan, Peace, and probably a couple hundred $ in misc. silver over the years. I get to the bank only once or twice a month, and I love to hear "Oh, we've been waiting for you to stop in" as I pass through the door.

I had never even though of this angel and don't see myself doing it anytime soon. Pocket Change is right what's the crime except geekiness?

A very interesting angle that I find most amusing yet functional if you really get down to. NOW bring along a loupe and really confuse people!

When I recycle my cans and bottles I am given all the money they owe me in old$2.00 bills and nothing but older coins. I am still trying to figure out if any are worth keeping.

    Vending machines! LOL!

This reminds me of the times when we were foolish, daredevil kids spending our summers in Ocean City, MD. Along the boardwalk at each of the side streets leading to it, were the "monster" soda machines that held 15-20 vertical columns of canned soda. The sodas were 35c, but they didn't take dollar bills in those days. We'd stuff napkins into the coin return, by day after the vendor restocked the machine, and come back late at night to make the rounds for "collections". It would usually result in $15-$20 in nickels and dimes.
