the 10th anniversary american eagle platinum half ounce proof & reverse proof will be out on december 13th, 2007. the price of that set might be very expensive. i would said between $2,000.00 to $2,200.00. and the mintage is quite high. are you guys ordering it?.

$2200 is a lot and I will pass, but $2100 I'm all over it. Seriously it is rumored to be $1900 and 30k sets. I hope that isn't the case.

if they make it i will buy as long as its below $4000 above that price i will have to think hard about it.

    remember 1/2 ounce

remember it is only a half ounce not one ounce platinum. and i noticed that premium were added high mostly to platinum instead of gold coins. it is interesting to see the outcome of this 10th anniversary set.

I have looked forward to this for the past year, but there is one problem. I drive a 94 accord with 220k miles on it and it s worth $1500. .To buy a coin worth more than my car is a little hard to swallow.

    car vs: platinum

but your car will always depreciated. and that platinum coin can go up. think about it.

So Elaine, are you a buyer of the reverse proof?

    buyer of platinum

am i a buyer of platinum coins?. no. but i just observed it recently and found that the premium attached to it is quite higher than the american eagle gold series. well, because of that. i might buy 5 to 6 set. again, it might be limit to one or five sets per household. for the meantime, only the mint know.

I have a civic - it is worth $200 and needs an oxygen sensor worth $400. How's that for a contradiction...
However i am thinking of the Pt Set as a complement to my Au and Ag sets.

Mint just announced price of platinum 10th anniversary set to be $1,949.95. The problem is they are issuing 30,000 sets. Way too many in my opinion. The gold reverse proof was only 10,000. I don't know how long it will take to sell out but I don't think it will be the first day, that's almost $60 million dollars worth. 30,000 is a large number for a collectable of this expense. You see what happened to the last dolley madison spouse series, it hasn't sold out in a week and a half because of the high price they put on it.

too high for platinum reverse proof

platinum reverse proof cost $1,069.00 each. you can buy proof at $880.95. total $1,949.95. currently bullion price is $720.00. not only that. mintage at 15,000 each are one of the highest for platinum series. if it really work out. it will be only 10 to 15% premium for first few days at e-bay and followed by crush to near bullion value in near future time. forget about it.

there are 30,000 sets so there will be 30,000 reverse proofs opposed to 15,000.

    Ouch! 30,000!

How can they possibly sell 30,000 sets? That is 60,000 coins! 30,000 ounces of platinum!

For 2006, the US Mint only sold 34,400 platinum coins in total! 2006 was only a total bullion sale of 13,550 ounces of platinum.

I will not be purchasing the platinum reverse proof set from the mint, but I may pick up a PCGS PF69 reverse platinum on ebay when it is selling for $800.

I agree with ajbuckle, there is no way the US mint is going to sell out 30000 sets. If they had set mintage at 10000, maybe.

The way I understand this is that if the mint doesn't sell out by Dec 31st, they can keep these listed for sale up until the 2008 W Platinum is up for sale which may be Spring 2008. Right????

Whats funny is that the platinum reverse proof set represents a 34% mark up over spot ($1995 set vs $1450 spot) ($500 premium over $1450) whereas the 2006 Silver Eagle Reverse proof set represented a 122% mark up over spot ($100 set price vs $45 spot for 3 oz of silver at $15) ($55 premium over $45)

I bought a bunch or platinum at $650-$750 per ounce that will quickly be sold to buy a set or two.

Keep in mind Platinum is a limited industrial metal that is consumed in the processes from catalytic converters to medicine and with high refining cost especially as energy cost increase. Sometimes its recycled when cost effective whereas gold is purely a commercial metal that is largely recycled.

I would be curious as to how much US mint produced gold, platinum, and silver is melted and restamped. As it is already .9995 pure it doesn't require extraction and refining, just melting and essentially they stamp out a new identical coin with a new date.
