@TexAg I should know this but I don't.. Does 40% silver and 90% silver have different values? What kind of premium gain are you looking at here? Nice find by the way!
Great score - Happened to me once and have been chasing the dragon ever since. What you have is an estate dump from a deceased collector's family. At the current price of silver ($16.50/oz), 40% halves are worth 4x - 5x face; 90% are worth around 12 - 12.5x face. Coin dealers pay a discount - typically around 70% of these values. See what other denominations were deposited in the same hoard, and have the teller track down what happened to the other halves.
@paddyman98 Interesting and timely question. I asked my local coin club dealer if he would trade me some circulated Morgan & Peace Dollars (which I need for my Dansco Album) for some of my spare Kennedy silver halves. He said a fellow club member was wanting to trade away his gold coins for 90% silvers. So, the dealer offered to broker a 3-way trade whereby I would trade my 1964 90% silvers (at 12 X face) towards circulated Morgan and Peace Dollars the dealer owned (at Gray Sheet Bid Price). He would then trade my 90% silvers to the other member for his gold coins (trade details unknown to me). I figure it's a good way me to get rid of spare 1964 halves and trade up for silver dollars. Deal or No Deal?
Thanks @Robby Bee I tried to catch the teller last week but she was out. Will follow up Tuesday with her as you suggest. Will let everyone know the outcome...
What are they asking for the Morgan and Peace Dollars (bid Greysheet)? It's probably at a premium over melt and it wouldn't be worth it, unless the condition of the dollars is excellent and/or they are better dates. I wouldn't pay more than $15 each for common date Morgan and Peace in AU+ shape; cull dollars are melt to me.
The coin shops in my area are selling Morgan AU's for $25 - $35. Only bought one older coin. I may have to go farther away.
That day was your lucky day! After a coin collector passes an the family member goes to clean out the house they roll up the coins an put them in the bank. Cherish that find as it might not happen again for a long time.
I brought the teller that sold me the great rolls last week some of the wife's homemade cookies today. She figured out the other rolls must have been sold before I got mine. C'est la vie, I'm just grateful I was able to get part of the batch! I asked if the lady dropped off any other denomination but she didn't, only the $600 in halves. I did leave her my card (stapled to the bag of cookies) and told her I was looking to buy any other halves and large dollars she gets in from customers. She promised to give me a call. I also talked to the Branch Manager, a likeable young man who seemed eager to help, and told him about wanting to find halves and large dollars. He said he would keep an eye out for me and let me know since the tellers don't like to keep them (no slots in their trays, lol). We'll see.....
Friend just gave me a box of loomis wrapped halves. Are they worth going thru. Don't save half dollars. Do you ever get like Benjamin halves in loomis rolls
@Cheech9712 Yes, I would go through the Loomis box. As I have mentioned in previous posts, Loomis rolls have produced the most silver of the various MWRs for me. And yes, I did find some 64-Ds. I believe all 5 were.
