I'm very new to Ancients. Could anyone please give me some information or references pertaining to this coin? Looking for date, type estimated grade and value. Weight is 5.1 grams, appears to be an Ancient piece. Thanks in advance.
Its a Byzantine Half Follis, but other than that, the obverse is pretty much gone to give you a definitive identification. Here is the correct orientation of your coin and an example of a similar coin as what it could be... SB 203 Justinian I AE Half follis (20 nummi) Nicomedia mint
Not possible since the legend is off-flan. There were several emperors who had the same type of reverse and hence it will be difficult to identify correctly. I am not even sure if the mint is Nicromedia. Its a coin for the bargin bin...
Okay. Thank you. How would you go about grading? What's your considered opinion on grade and possible value?
Between the poor strike on the obverse and the damage across the obverse, it is not worth much. As I said, its for the bargin bin. I would grade it Fine...
Here's a half follis (this one is with Justin I & wide Sophia) that I've both bought and sold for around $5-7 both times. Pretty much like @Quant.Geek said, bargain bin.
As other friends have pointed out, the obverse is too far gone for certain attribution. About all we can say is that it is mid-late 6th c.
