I recently came across this 1984 penny with what appears to have a broken die(?) Issue and it's right where the designers initials (VDB) should be. On the reverse, exactly opposite of the issue, the letters "STA" in STATES appear to be flattened out a good bit, or the look of a weak strike(?). What should I label this, to add to my collection? I love the Coin Talk forum and would greatly appreciate any and all information/help. Thanks!!

It's a cud! A cud is a break along the rim that extends into the field. In this case, the coin metal that should have flowed into the "STA" on the reverse flowed into the break instead.

And a nice little cud at that. Perhaps what's even nicer, though, is seeing the real thing for a change. ;)

I've found that most of my cuds come from 83 and 84. Not sure what they were doing at the mint those years but they were riding those dies hard.

Nice fine, I've only found one and that was a state quarter.

Thank you. I got lucky on that one.. I found a "in God we rust" quarter the other day on a 2005 California quarter (most are on the Wisconsin one as I understand it) and I'll be darned; my grand-daughter found the same issue on a 1997 quarter just last night... The word "in" is barely visible. I would LOVE to find a cud (like on my penny) on a quarter.
