Greetings I have an interesting coin that has caused me some sleepless nights. I cannot identify the coin, per the Red Book. I have taken it to my local coin shop, and they too are stumped. They (coin store management) were talking like this was a unicorn. I am too much of a cynic to get to excited. So I figured I would turn to the forums. This is what I know of the coin: * it is a coin * it is an 1976 Ike * It is silver * it has no mint mark * It is type 2 * It is in circulated condition * Weight is 22.8 grams (however I do not trust my scale, I was half an ounce off in the most recent pinewood derby for my son's cub scouts) *Seems to be the same diameter of all other Ikes Any thoughts and information would be much appreciated.
At 22.8 grams, It wouldn't be silver. A clad Ike would weigh 22.68 grams. As for the reversed reverse...Am I seeing a line around the edge? Like it was perhaps cut out like a magician's coin?
Can you put a normal coin next to the Reverse side picture of your Ike.. I want proof that it is indeed what you show it is
Appreciate your cynicism. Did the coin dealer weigh the coin? A simple look in the red book would tell you that the silver issue has a different weight than the clad issue. You may want to keep this in mind when you ask your local coin dealer for info in the future. (However, "dealers" like this are ripe for cherry picking)
@Plumchas First, welcome to the neighborhood! It is not unusual for your local coin shop to know very little about the coin. For one thing, most coin shops don't waste time with errors & varieties because it is a niche market. They don't want to waste their time looking for these specialty collectors. They want to turn over their inventory as quickly as possible. With that said, I doubt that this is a magician's coin because there is no way in Hades that the reverse can be backward as you have shown. Instead, I suggest that you come back here and post this coin on April 1st. Chris
Can something like this be done with a photo editing program? Some people like to play. edit-rick you just beat me to it by seconds. LOL.
Sorry I accidentally flipped the reverse, trying to figure out how to post the coin. I am not a troll, and for a person to go there off the get go is a bit harsh. The dealer did not weigh the coin, I did once I got it home. The coin reverse is normal I am just a bit tech challenges
That's funny! We thought you were trying to trick us there for a moment! So what's so different about your Ike? Can you show the edge?
The weight of yours is the weight of a clad half. I highly doubt yours is silver. Even if it was off half and ounce like you said, that wouldn't put it close to 24.624 grams, which is the weight of a silver Ike.
ok was able to get some better, and correct photos. first is the correct reverse without me flipping it. second is the tissue test results against a clad Ike last image is the actual test So the coin is definitely silver?
If comparing the coin in question to a clad the Date is fatter, also the crater marks on the moon are much larger in the questionably coin. Any thoughts?
