A hoard of semi-key date Jeffersons which led me to a 1950-D!

So on Thursday I went to a bunch of banks grabbing between $20 and $50 in nickels from each... In all, I bought $396 in nickel rolls... they were a mixture of CWR and MWR... the MWR were a mix of LOOMIS, Brinks, Old style Brinks, and String&Son rolls...

One bank I bought $50 from included 17 S&S rolls, and 8 old style Brinks rolls... I went through the S&S rolls first and only found 4 pre-60s, though one was a 46-S and another was a 51-S... So I was happy...

Then, I poured open one of the 8 old style Brinks rolls... and I saw all kinds of coins dated 1946 through 1952, many with S-mintmarks...

Yes, there were old coins and S mints everywhere! As it turned out, six different dated coins where in there: 1946-S, 1947-S, and 1952 coins, as were the semi-key 1949-S, 1950, and 1951-S coins. Needless to say, I was shocked, and quickly opened the other 7 rolls... more of the same... over 40 of these coins, all from these 6 dates and mints, along with a 1975-S proof showed up.

If you know me at all, you know what I did next... I went back to that bank... the sweet Scandinavian teller who had helped me the first time though wasn't at the window... so I asked the teller in the window next to hers if she was still at work, and she pointed behind me - she was with another customer helping set up a business account. I told that teller I was wanting more of her nickels... but she misunderstood me and I thought I wanted some nickels from her. She opened a fresh S&S box and seeing they weren't new, I took $20 worth...

Then I sat and waited for the teller who had helped me earlier... I then started to unroll the S&S coins... first two rolls didn't produce anything... then the third roll came... and I see a 1950 appear... 1950-D 2-15-2018.jpg

So I flip it over. And yes, the D WAS THERE!

Needless to say, I'm in shock, and grinning a mile wide!

About 10 minutes later the teller who had helped me the first time came over, and I explained I wanted more of her rolls... so she went through her inventory and found five more rolls that were like the ones I had purchased earlier...

I opened them first thing when I got home and found 21 more of the old coins... In all, the hoard produced 62 coins, including 24 of the semi-keys (1949-S, 1950, and 1951-S), dated 1946 through 1952, and that 1975-S proof. The vast majority are in Extra Fine or better condition:

    1946-S: 12
    1947-S: 9 (2 BU)
    1949-S: 9
    1950: 7
    1951-S: 8
    1952: 17 (1 BU)

Sounds like you had a great time with lots of good dates and Mint marks as the pay off. I'd be very nice to those tellers.

Nice findings I like S mints the most of all and are the most scarce in my opinion -new to this, lol. Good luck!!

To put things in perspective on your great find. I began roll hunting in 1960 and from then until 1966 I searched only cent and nickel rolls. Every week my paper route money was rolled over through rolls repeatedly. In that time the only nickel that I never found in change was the 1950-d. Even now it is much more common to find a BU 1950-d than a circulated 1950-d. Well done. Your due diligence and follow through got you that coin.

Circulated 1950 D's are scarcer than the BU examples.

I think I have 6 BU rolls in stock and only 2 rolls of circs......

This is what I hear... and I know of a lot of CRH who have found BU examples in circulation. Not me though. The 3 I've found (I each in 1985, 2017, 2018) have all been circulated, XF-ish coins.

Funny, but where I live on the West coast, the semi-key S-mints (1949-S - 55 found and 1951-S - 40 found) are not all that difficult to find. Even the 1938-S (7 found to date) and 1939-S (13) sometimes appear. Conversely, the 1950 (22) and most especially 1955 (5) Philly coins are quite challenging for me. I had only found 15 of the 1950 coins prior to this hoard, so finding 7 more was really nice... the hoard also put me at an even roll of 1951-S nickels found CRH. Happy hunting!

Thats my car payment and some mortage. Loving your search. Glad cuz we enjoy as much as if we found a 64d kennedy in a nickle roll. Are you you people feeling me

Naaaaaa. I'm a dealer. I bought those years ago in an estate. They are only worth about $300/roll right now and if they go up a little I am going to sell them.
