I got a unopened box of nickles from the bank and they happen to be all 2017p. Why do i find rotated scratches destroying the obverse on some and the reverse on others. Why does the mint let coins like this out.
Exactly. It is the crimping wheel for closing shotgun rolls. Usually see it on at least one of the two coins on the ends of a bank-wrapped roll.
I suspect many are coin roll crimping result, but maybe same or more from the older mechanical coin counting machines.
Because the mint makes them for circulation not collection. Because they are delivered to the coin terminals in 1 ton balistic bags. The counting and wrapping is the responsibility of the coin terminal.
As stated above coins leave the mint in bags, tubs and loose. They are only rolled by the mint for the special collector releases. That damage in an unopened box came from whoever rolled the coins.
