Went to my main bank today to actually do some non-CRH banking, lol. New teller took care of my check deposit and then I asked if she had any large dollar or half dollar coins. She said a lady dropped off ~$600 in halves and she had them in her personal vault. I asked if I could see some of the rolls. They were a mixture of two different CRW wrappers and one Brinks MWR. I wanted to buy all $600, but when she counted them out, there was only $340. She was really perplexed about what happened to the rest of them. I gave her my name and number and told her if they showed up to give me a call. I proceeded to eat lunch and run my other errands. A couple of hours later, I had a few minutes in the parking lot of my last dump bank. So, I opened up one of the tan colored CWRs and it was a solid roll of 40%ers! Then I opened a brown colored CWR and it was solid clad. So, I opened 2 more tan CWRs - solid silver! 2 more brown CWRs - solid clad. At this point I texted the wife and told her I would save the remaining tan rolls for her and I to go through later. We did, and out of the 18 tan rolls, 10 were solid silver! The other 8 rolls averaged about 10 silvers per roll. Total count was: (3) Benjamins ('52, '54, '62) (5) '64 (14) '65 (23) '66 (83) '67 (75) '68 (78) '69 Total of (8) 90%ers & (273) 40%ers. The 281 silvers found today equate to 59% of my 2017 annual total - what a blessing! I haven't opened the rest of the brown CWRs, but I expect they have all been searched. Enjoy the pics and HH!
It almost makes me sick to hear story's like this not because someone else is lucky enough to score something like that no to that a big congrats but more that my luck sucks so bad I never in the years ive looked had such a nice score Once again nice score op!
Awesome stuff there!!! That kind of find doesn't happen very often, for me it's been a looong time! Keep hunting 'cause when it does happen it makes up for those dry spells. But please... try to save some for the rest of us, will ya?! Congratulations!!!
*applause* Nice score! I once scored three rolls (if I remember correctly), from my credit union. They were ALL 1966-67 40% silver coins, except for two. One was a 1964 90% silver and the other was a clad Bicentennial, as I recall.
So, today I checked out the other 16 rolls (15 CWR brown wrappers & 1 Brinks MWR). The CWRs had lots of high AU quality 71-Ds & 72-Ds as if the original collector took them out of circulation from the get-go. Two 74-D DDOs, one of which is now my best specimen at AU . Oddly, there was also a 1970 Mexican peso (not silver) and two 1979 SBAs (not near dates ). But the best part was another solid 40% silver roll and another roll that had five 40% silvers! Totals: (1) 65 (2) 66 (8) 67 (8) 68 (6) 69 Total silver count from the entire batch of $340 is 306 silvers (8 - 90%, 298 - 40%).
Nice find I didn't even think banks stocked half dollars anymore . Can't beat that find. I guess it pays to ask, better yet it's nice to know someone in the bank who doesn't care about collectable coins or currency so you have an in.
That is a great story, nice going. I live in Ct. and really only deal with a couple branches and when I ask them if they have any interesting coins or currency, I get a slightly puzzled look and normally they have nothing. Most tellers seem uninterested and could care less, but I try every once in a while hoping for a sweet find like the one mentioned here. Awesome...
Fantastic score! It's nice to run into that from time to time. Glad someone who knows the value got them. I always feel sorry for the lady that dropped them off at the bank. She could no doubt use the extra bucks.
Keep looking Eric, a nice score will eventually happen for you. The odds are low, but with enough persistence something good will come through!
Don't give up Eric. Sooner or later you'll score. A few years ago I went to a bank, not my usual one. I needed a roll of dimes. I got back in the car and opened the roll. All silver. About 3/4's were Rosie's and the rest Mercs. I went back in a asked for more rolls like this one. She said a guy came in about an hour ago with these two rolls. I already had one. Naturally I bought the other plus another roll so I'd have my clad dimes. The second roll was all Mercs. $10.00, all silver for face. I still have them and I haven't searched them yet. One day.
That's very true! It all does come around at some point. Luck is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity
Holy crap that's awesome! Congrats! The only place I've ever scored any silver is from coinstars although it's been a while. I've never found a single silver coin at a bank and that's not bc of a lack of trying lol. That is a once in a lifetime score you hit.
