WOAH, was all I could think when I was perusing the latest edition of the NUMISMATIST. An individual who I've had passing communications and (I think, Ebay) business transactions with in the past couple of years with was banned for shady trade practices it seems. Now, being somewhat of a new "INTERNET Numismatic Community Member" this surprised the hell out of me, but then again maybe it's not so unusual when so many have been NARUd by Ebay for counterfeit and overgrading as threads here and elswehere have alluded to. Have any of you fellow forum members ever known of someone being bounced by the ANA? It could have been for any number of reasons. Take Care Ben
i don't put much into the ana. one can be tossed for not returning a book/or not paying fees on material that belongs to their library. on a side note. i am not a member nor will ever consider becoming a member of the ana. however, their library is one of the most extensive and complete numismatic wise, next to the loc. ''was banned for shady trade practices it seems'' perhaps they [the ana] should look into the proverbial mirror and not throw stones from within the walls of their glass house. historically, the ana has not been the poster child for ethical and fiscal responsibility. aside from the ana library and seldom offered seminars, the ana does little to expand/promote the hobby and the membership sees little to no return on the annual dues besides the cute little membership number proudly displayed in a store front window, a dealer's homepage, or in one's sig line. it's quite obvious the ana has no regulation over the hobby and their members are not held to a higher standard but, often times novice and seasoned collectors alike experience a false sense of security/trust when dealing with a ana member/dealer.
Ben: I don't know about being banned, perhaps I have been also. I joined in August at the Milwaukee ANA and haven't received a single issue of the Numismatist yet. Perhaps I was banned for speaking out against Horton & Cippoletti. (At any rate, it was worth the effort and cost-- they are gone now.)
Frank, You said something against Horton? OH MY... : ) How can you do that? He looked like Fred Flintstone just how bad could he be? LOL Ben, I noticed a few of those in the mag this time. I find it interesting that they maybe finally doing something about.... Oh whats that word...oh ya, INTEGRITY.. Good for them..
Jim: Yeah, he looks like Fred Flintstone, with a bad rug. As for both of them, I have been writing to Numismatic News for the past two years and saying that they should go. I guess that others agreed with me.
When I joined - it took several months for the magazine to start coming - I had to write them an e-mail for it to start coming.
CT, I was waiting for someone to ask who it was. Now upon realizing how common it must be... well, you understand LOL
Well, their membership is rather low. Under 1,000 in my state, and only a handful in many others. I joined in hopes of promoting the hobby/ business of coin interest(The hobby brings alot of people together). Added membership/ revenue will do alot to promote the hobby in my opinion(Build it and they will come). I don't dwell on the negatives, as i think even though they don't always agree. They all want the best for the coin community.
My billing statement reads that the membership card is sent in four weeks. The magazine should arrive in two months. So you might want to contact them about your November/ December issues.
