Went to a friends house and they had this on the wall. It came from a bank that their relative worked at back in the day. Sadly it has been sun bleached from being mounted on the wall for years. Any thoughts of value?
No, but it sure looks like a replacement note. That should add value along with the serial number one. Too bad it's bleached. Did you commandeer it? If it were mine I'd keep it for a long long time. I bet it's the only replacement known for that bank. Unique! Congrats if it's yours, and thanks for sharing.
That's a nice note! Lowell is right up the way into Massachusetts. It was a booming mill town once upon a time, now not so much. Lowell was featured in a Mark Walbergh movie about a boxer from there, a few years back.
https://www.spmc.org/member-presentations/large-size-replacement-national-bank-notes-1903-1920 @lettow , read the memphis_handout.pdf. Notice the "droopy two's" in the Treasury serial numbers on the OP note. It's the old style font. When they made replacements, they used the old single action numbering machines. Also, the number "4" on the replacements are easy to spot as well. It's better explained in the handout.
I knew the answer but I suspect few readers are familiar with the ability to identify replacements on large size Nationals. You may want to consider a new post explaining this.
I never realized they had replacements on these notes! The note isnt mine but a woman I work with. Her grandfather is the signaure on the left side.
