Interesting coins, especially the Seljuk dirham.

There is a thread on another coin board stating that European collectors like their coins unslabbed and that ancient coin collectors feel the same way.

Personally, I like to handle the little darlings and wonder who handled them before, in the case of ancients sometimes a thousand years ago or more.

    One of the little darlings:

Antoninus Pius Aureus - Standing with Globe
    Size: 19.5mm, weight: 7.26gm, catalog: RIC 256a
    Struck: AD 155-156 Rome

    Thanks.

Come to think of it, the teeny-tiny gold elephant coin (fanam? fractional fanam? fantasy?) seen earlier in this thread would almost certainly go "ineligible type" at a TPG, too, and I knew that up front, which raises the question of why I bought it. I dunno. I just found it intriguing. Forty bucks is not a huge gamble, but it's way higher than the coin's neglible bullion value. What am i gonna do with the thing? I might return it. Then again, it might be fun to make it my March giveaway. Or I could "bundle" it with the Seljuk dirham to make an even more interesting lot.

Yes, both of those gold pieces came from European dealers, raw.

Maybe I could trade the pair in to one of these European dealers, towards one really nice coin, preferably from the same era, since I'd be swapping away both of my pieces of medieval gold.

Could you please write Mrs. Mumper back and ask her to pick me up a gold commemorative set at the Panama-Pacific Exposition when she's there?

Indeed! Preferably with the frame, right?

    I'll give her a call.

Now, where did I leave that Ouija board? Hmmm...

Hmmm, you're right...better make it two sets. I'll send one set in to be graded.

    Thanks in advance!

Monday brought three more. (One was from the orange pickup slip which was Item #1 at the beginning of this thread.)

Thanks. I opened those last three. I'll catch you up on those soon, when I get a chance.

Hey, maybe I got one of the fine Acme products I ordered. You never know.

    Or something unexpected.

(Actually, that last would not be entirely unexpected around here.)
