I'm glad that you only asked what it is.. and not how much it could be worth. Some new collectors are concerned about value first thinking they have a high value Mint Error.

As stated, it is just damage :yack:
And.. If you found it in a coin roll most likely somone wanted to get rid of it ;)

    Someone owes you a quarter.

I was also minted in 1965 and I feel like that some days.

Bring it back to the bank as "mutilated change". They are supposed to give you a quarter for it. I do metal detecting, so I bring in all my mutilated coins at the end of the year. So far I have not had any problems with it. (They do put it in my checking account though, they don't give me coin for it.)

Now that the mint has suspended their mutilated coin redemption program, that may stop.

Thanks for the update. I knew when they settled their lawsuit with the guy redeeming them they indicated they might be restarting it but I was not aware they had made that announcement. You will notice though that they use future tense in their language. They are going to restart it, not that they HAVE restarted it. And from the last link (also the Mints announcement was only three weeks ago.)

    This was also interesting

So you can't redeem more than a pound at a time. No wait they are wrong, per the Mint site you can't redeem LESS than a pound. And they have to be sorted by denomination/alloy. (Except cents, BUT if they are unsorted by alloy you get redemption at $1.46 per pound. Sorted Zincolns get redeemed at $1.81 per pound.)
