Who’s the Most Culturally Significant Person in your Collection? (According to MIT)

Wow @Alegandron And I already skipped ahead and saw your others. I love them all. Your collection is incredible. Sometimes I fantasize about which ten CT member collections I would like to see all together in one place. Ohhh man. I know your collection is one of them. @TIF is another. I won't assemble the list here but maybe one day I'll get around to actually writing out my fantasy list.

On the basis of that, allow me to offer this. He did not strike the coins but Benjamin Franklin is probably the most culturally significant of the Founders of the Republic. He was a scientist, a diplomat, a statesman. He also was involved (at a remove) with the production of other coins.

    Franklin Halves.jpeg

I add also, Queen Victoria of the UK and its empire as defining an age. Her ascendency marked the beginning of two generations of peace, prosperity, invention, enterprise, and social change.

I will also add that it is perfectly acceptable to add coins of individuals that DIDN'T make the list that you think should have!

    Example:
    IMG_8957.JPG
While both his father and brother made the list Domitian ended up getting the snub despite being the last of the Flavians!

I have edited the OP to call for other interesting individuals not included.

I forgot to comment on this piece earlier AA but I think this is one of my favorites in your collection! Beautiful patina.

You have some really fantastic medieval coins Red.

Thank you for the kind comments everyone. And, thank you @LaCointessa ... I just enjoy finding cool coins that speak to me about History. I just do not worry about their condition or the numismatics around them. I know, I am a very odd collector, but I am having a lot of fun!

I agree, @Orfew, those should be on the list! I bet you would be the champ for a more sensible list of historical figures. :)

Here are a few (on the list) that aren't seen on CT so much:

    23 Henry VIII
    Screen Shot 2018-02-12 at 2.12.46 PM.jpg

43 Charles Martel. No coin is firmly attributed to him, but this one was issued during his ascendancy, a Merovingian denier of St. Denis, 700-725:
    Screen Shot 2018-02-12 at 2.14.58 PM.jpg

52 Darius III (Alegandron posted one but the photo didn't come through)
    Screen Shot 2018-02-12 at 2.17.00 PM.jpg

    54 Guan Yu and
    84 Liu Bei
These two guys were closely associated, I think this coin of the Shu kingdom would do for both of them:

    60 Kublai Khan

    70 Louis the Pious

79 Mehmet II (akce issued in the first year of the renewed Constantinople mint):

OK, since we are going super modern Scan_20170126 (4).png Scan_20170126 (3).png here is:
MARIE ANTOINETTE(126): actually her nephew from Germany Franciscus II. The year he minted this silver taler/coin - 1793, she said "let them eat cake"(or maybe not?) and we all know what transpired. The city of Ratison/Regensberg is detailed on the reverse. Had a necklace loop soldered on the top edge that was removed.
I believe also that this dude was THE LAST OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPERORS! so you Roman collectors better get one as a bookend for your collection.

We have 65% of them so far! For convenience, here's a list of those still missing, with a couple notes from me in italics:

    4 - Charlemagne (17) (want want want!!)
    25 - Cyrus the Great (147)
29 - Solon* (161) -- any archaic Athenian coin would do (though probably issued after his departure from Athens)
    34 - Clovis I* (223) -- any early Merovingian would do... @panzerman?
    36 - Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (226)
    41 - William Wallace* (?) (250)
    42 - Vercingetorix* (253)
    47 - Romulus Augustulus (273)
    51 - Mary I of Scotland (293)
    53 - Cao Cao(?) (303) -- @TypeCoin971793?
    56 - Pippin the Younger (331)
62 - Hugh Capet of France (353) -- damn, missed one of these in the last CNG eAuction...
    65 - Oda Nobunaga (363)
    66 - Odoacer (364) -- @ValiantKnight?
    68 - Philip II of Spain (378)
    71 - Mary I of England (400)
    72 - Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor (428)
    73 - Tokugawa Ieyasu (429)
    76 - Aurelian (445)
    77 - Jovian (464)
78 - Alcibiades* (465) -- a standard 5th c. Athenian tet would do the trick. Mine is too ugly!
    81 - Theodoric the Great (489) -- again, @ValiantKnight?
    82 - Gallienus (490)
    83 - Croesus (496)
    85 - Philip IV of France (518)
    88 - Honorius (544)
    89 - Godfrey of Bouillon (546)
    91 - William the Conqueror (558) -- @alde?
    92 - Decius (561)
93 - Charles the Bald, Holy Roman Emperor (571)
    94 - Ashoka (592)
    96 - Hamilcar Barca (615) -- @Alegandron, @TIF
    97 - Arcadius (623)
    98 - Julius Nepos (637) -- and again, @ValiantKnight to the rescue!
    99 - Cardinal Richelieu (647)

Still a few on there we can knock off easily.

TypeCoin971793 Just a random guy on the internet

I could be mistaken, but I believe this Wu Zhu was attributed to him. (Not my coin, but I have one like it, albeit unpictured).

The website I stole the image from says it was attributed to Dong Zhou, one of the last rulers of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The problem with Han coins is that they cat Wu Zhus for the entire time, so delineating which emperor cast what is very hard if not impossible to tell. (My wu zhu reference is at home.) Each emperor having their own coin issue was not a tradition practices with regularity until the Tang Dynasty.

I left this one in for two reasons
    1. It gives me an excuse to see some classic Athenian Tets.
    2. I read somewhere (I think on Forvm) that Alcibiades could theoretically have been depicted on a Kyzikos hekte!
