Could You Guys Do Me a Solid?

Hey everyone,

Happy Monday! maybe.....

So, I want to get over this thing with my bro and I've been struggling to figure out how to do that. I was looking through the coin pics on my computer and think I've found what could be a really good ice breaker. But, I need some help.

Bro got this coin a couple of years back from the coin shop that's closest to us. They deal mostly in Canadian coin and have very little ancient coins. The only info on the cardboard holder said that it was from ancient Greece and was connected to Alexander iii.

So, we tried to find some info on it, but horribly identified it and have had difficulty finding an accurate attribution for it.

So, here it is:



From we have, it's an AE quarter unit from Macedon possibly attributed to the great Alexander.

So, I was hoping my good friends here could help me ID the coin and then present it to my bro. I'm thinking that starting with what we have in common would be best.

Try Erythrae in Ionia. Although this looks like an Alex the Great type, that's not the name spelled out on the reverse. The EPY probably means Erythrae and the odd name (APXIΔHMO) is a magistrate

I just realized all these are Drachms. Are you sure it is an AE? If it is, it has to be a similar but different coin.

 

Looks like it might be silver.

It honestly doesn't feel or look like it's silver. It has a dark brown colour to it. This is where the confusion comes in.

Silver Drachm.

 

Due to it's proximity I assume it is under the Rhodian standard and should weight 3.9 grams or less. If it is under 3g or over 4g, I think you can rule out silver.

 

I don't know Erin but I'm leaning to the "it looks silver" side. Do you have it in hand?
Check the weight and compare it to the drachm David posted.

The drachm attribution is the one he has, but I thought for sure it's bronze.

Survey says I'm wrong, lol. Won't be the first and, certainly, won't be the last.

I just wanted to try and do something to initiate the conversation.

He hasn't made any coin or artifact purchases. I know because I asked Dad and my brother always shows him his latest acquisition.

On another note, I'm thinking about asking my dad if I can finally bring my coins here. It's been three months and everything's going well, so I hope he agrees!
