Here is the Diadumenian Denarius I picked up from Frank Robinson's unsold lot. I'm sure the flaw turned off the bidders, but I am OK with it. Was surprised to see it come with a Gordon Andreas Singer tag, a well-respected dealer/writer for Medieval Numismatics. Diadumenian (217 - 218 A.D.) AR Denarius O: M OPEL ANT DIADVMENIAN CAES, draped and cuirassed bust right, from behind. R: SPES PVBLICA, Spes advancing left, flower in right, raising skirt with left. 21mm 3.14g Cohen #21, RIC #117 Ex Frank Robinson Auction 103, Feb 6, 2018 Ex. Gordon Andreas Singer
Gordon Singer is a regular at shows I attend and one of my favorite dealers. In the last few years he has increased his Roman selection greatly mostly from old collections so some have been better than others according to the tastes of the previous owner. Not long ago he had a collection with many rare coins in low end condition which provided a few coins I have shown here so I may have seen the Diadumenian then unless Frank got there first. He does not like Greek coins so rarely has much there. Thirty years ago as members of the DC ancients club (ANSW) I was happy to have him as a friend but he was 99.9% medieval then so we had little in common.
Cool new score! I can't comment on the pedigree but here's a provincial Diadumenian: Diadumenian, AD 217-218 AE, 28mm, 11.4g; 12h; Nikopolis ad Istrum Obv.: K M OΠΕΛ ΔΙΑΔΟUMENIANOC AV; draped bust right Rev.: UΠ ΑΓΡΙΠΠΑ NIKOΠΟΛΙΤΩΝ ΠΡΟC ICTΠ; city gate with three crenulated towers
Nice find @Mat. I have one siler coin of Diadumenian in very poor condition. DIADUMENIAN AR Denarius OBVERSE: M OPEL ANT DIADVMENIAN CAES, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: PRINC IVVENTVTIS, Diadumenian standing right, holding standard & baton, two more standards to right Struck at Rome, 218 AD 1.4g, 18mm RIC 102
Nice snare @Mat ! For some-odd reason I seriously looked at that Denarius during bidding... Nice you got it in the Unsolds! My only Diadumenian RI Diadumenian 217-218 AE26 Nicopolis ad Istrum Homonoia stdg Ex: @Mat
That was quick! I'm not sure Frank has even had a chance to mail out my wins yet. I had to choose between ordinary ($3) and registered ($18). I chose ordinary and will pray to the gods it doesn't get sent to Thailand like one of his previous packages to me did. That Diadumenian has some really nice details, the minor flaw on the portrait doesn't really detract. It has quite an unusual look too... the fields having a very deep tone in contrast to the bright silver at the higher points. Is that close to its actual look or just how it photographs?
Thanks, it’s actually close to the actual look. Part of me thought it was fake since some look like that, but was assured it wasn’t.
Definitely looks better in your photo... nice score!! I have an ex-Singer Richard III penny; here's my only Diadumenian (AE16 of Marcianopolis):
