I'm curious to see if anyone might know why the coinstar or other coin cashing machines would reject my 1972 Nickel, (Denver mint)?. The coin has normal wear and weighs 4.9/5.0 grams. I also weighed several 1970's nickels. All the weights were within the tolerance of my scale. Is there something obvious that i al missing? Im fairly new to coin collecting. Thanks

Thanks. With the speed at which those machines operate I didn't think they would be so accurate. But obviously they are. This particular one rejected the nickel when deposited with other nickels and by itself. Multiple times

Coinstars also kick out other coins sometimes when they are mixed in the same batch.
Working in and out of retail stores where coinstars machines are in just about every chain you will find a host of items that may make the machine kick out good coins.
Mostly world coins ,but tokens and coin batteries will also make the machine discharge in the rejection shoot many coins that are good issue free coins.
I always check out the machines....I believe my best find was near $6 in coin where a Canadian nickel triggered a nice payoff for my time spent checki g the reject shoot.

Yeah, no doubt. I almost left my kick outs behind when I found this nickel. The reject box is easily passed over if you're in a rush. I did have Canadian coins, slot machine tokens from Panama, video game tokens and a few washers. Lol

Coin Star machines aren't too much different from the motor in a car. If it isn't serviced regularly, it is liable to act in strange ways. Have you tried using a Coin Star in another location?

1/10 of a gram should not reject it. If it is bent in any way that might.
Why you want to give 10% of your money away is your business. I just put my coins in the coin accepter at the grocery and get full value for them.
