    Hello!
First post... just looking for some much needed help...
I'm interested in purchasing this coin... I have absolutely zero knowledge when it comes to collectable coins...
He said the coin was worth $1000ish
The nickel has the first 'o' missing in Monticello.
Just wondering if someone could help me determine it's value??
    Thanks!

The missing O is from a grease filled die, and the guy selling it, well, has no clue what so ever. This is a common error, worth about a buck or two depending on it's condition. What a joke.

Struck through grease or debris. That's why the letter O is missing. Worth 5 Cents only.

@Pickin and Grinin you beat me by seconds in answering

First, welcome to the neighborhood, Lyndsay!

Like previously stated, this coin missing a letter is from a grease-filled die and this anomaly is very common. The person selling this coin is hoping to find some inexperienced person who is willing to pay stupid money for it. You were right by asking questions from other people, first. Personally, I wouldn't pay 10c for it.

It's worth $1000 if he finds someone that wants in more than they want the $1000.

It would be EXTREMELY difficult to find that person as there is probably only one such person in the whole world.

I am a newbie, too, who has been reading posts of this site for a while. I have about 4-5 gallons of coins that my dad saved in jugs - mostly pennies. I have discovered several that are "interesting", but I have gotten discouraged because most of the time someone posts, the coin is worth nothing. Is it worth my while to posts some to find out? I don't want to take up anyone's time.

Don't worry about taking up time with posts. Like said above someone has to find them.

Now that you know better, inform Mr. '$1000ish' that it's not even worth $1sh & offer him dimeish if you really want the coin for your collection ;)

Wow! That is really outrageous to try and sell that for $1,000.00 - but I guess there is no law against it.

I think what happened was that the 0 from
the reverse fell off the coin, and landed right
where the owner meant to say he'd sell it for $1.
He duplicated it again twice, thereby putting
three 0's just past the "$1" price

THAT's why it looks like the owner wants $1,000

Start a new thread. Try to keep it to a single coin. Pics are important. Search the archives for tips on posting pics. There are some good threads on this.

You'll get good answers along with the occasional "Get of my Lawn" response (ignore them, that's part of being on an anonymous forum). The experienced members will correct any obvious incorrect responses.

Remember, even the minor errors with little to no value above face are not easy to find, so don't get your hopes up on getting rich. But the knowledge you'll gain over time is worth a lot

Hi lindsay. Great coin. Might not be this so called 1000 dollar coin. Might be a grease filled variety. But absolutely a keeper for a dollar

That encourages me. I'll figure it out. Question: If I cannot read a date on a coin, is it OK to clean it enough to see it?
