To open or not to open?

So, my father worked for loomis armored trucks and he bought and saved about 15 rolls of the 2005 bison Jefferson nickels. Now, he wants to keep them unopened, I on the other hand feel that if there are some speared on there then that might end up being a huge loss (like if tons more are discovered etc.).

These were straight from the mint and headed to the bank brand new.

What's y'all's take? I did purchase some of the storage rolls for them just in case we can come to some sort of middle ground on it. I don't feel like he has an understanding of what happens with error coins. We share our coin collection so we do have to agree on something like this but I would like to see some opinions and the reasoning as to why to not open them (so I'm not one sided), as well as let him see some opinions and reasonings as to why we should open them.

    Thank you,

    Rachel

Oh, I have a little wounded one from the only roll that he said yes too. I'll upload it in a minute.

So that's the year for the so-called "Speared Bison" variety, then? (Sorry, I don't do moderns or errors very much.)

Me, being a creature of insatiable curiosity, would be opening them if I had any interest in such things, but on the other hand, I can see the wisdom of leaving them wrapped and sealed and such.

So if I kept them wrapped.. What would be the purpose then? If I opened them and found an error, let's say speared bison.. What's the value of a simple Die Crack? Nothing major IMHO.. But they belong to him so let him do what he desires.

If they aren't from Denver .
There will be no speared bison then .

    @RachelRuth

When the Mint introduced the Westward Journey designs for the new nickel, I liked them so I bought bags and rolls......about 18,000 nickels in total. The only reason I haven't ripped them all open to search for anomalies is because I don't want to have to re-roll them to take to the bank.

Tell your father that his 15 rolls won't even fill up his gas tank!

You're forgetting the hysteria that's driving these. She finds one, those crackpots are going to pay her a good hunk of dough for it.

The keyword is "crackpots". How many of those crackpots would be likely to file a complaint with PayPal claiming that they never received the coin?

If there's a high demand $$$ for it right now I'd open them and try to find it.

Reminds me of the Congrats Sets .. super high, short term demand .. now the prices are floating way back down.

So if you want to profit from any errors, the time is now. Who knows what the future holds in valuations.

Yeah, there is a high demand. The TPGs who take the rake-offs from these when they certify them make sure of it.

Why keep them in original rolls? They have very little value as such.

I recently shipped 3000 rolls to a customer.

    I got $3.25/roll for them.

With so many of these rolls saved away by others I'd crack them open and have fun looking for errors.

That's a crock! Give me one example of a TPG twisting someone's arm forcing them to submit a coin.

Well, they're all from Denver. I live in Denver. The one I did open had a couple interesting die cracks. And this one that kinda looks like it has doubled on the buffalo buffalo eye and ear. Wish I could get better pictures and lighting. It's so hard to look at the shiny ones with light. (Open to input on making that easier).

Here's an idea. Weigh each roll and open the heaviest and lightes ones. That might soothe your pain. And get that monkey off your back. Its not a job its an adventure. Good luck. Hug and kiss dad

Maybe it's one of the Hunt's buying up all of them up, trying to corner the market:)

I picked them up at my bank in 2005 about 10 boxes/week at face value along with statehood quarters they were getting for me. Hoped they were going to be a big deal. <sigh>

12 years later it was obvious I waited way too long. Story of my life. I usually sell off a day before stuff goes through the roof or I miss the bus and end up with piles and piles of glorp.

If you ignore the money that could have been made with the money tied up in them (Interest at least!), I made $3750.00 as they sweetened the deal by covering the flat rate expense,

PS: Yes, My friends at the post office hate me at times. Especially since I plaster the boxes with old discount postage.
