Has anyone seen sacajawea with some type of gold metal on it that looks like glitter ? The glitter is on the obverse and you can still see the image very well. I don't know what happened here. It does not scrape off with moderate pressure.
Kinda sounds like someone did exactly what you describe - they placed gold glitter on the coin. Either with glue or perhaps the coin was coated with shelac or clear fingernail polish first.
Well thank you Mr. Moderator sir, you are problaly correct, however, the glitter is very very hard and looks much like 14k gold. Well I like to look at it so maybe I will keep it. Or not.
Rene - It is quite possible that you have a coin that was gold plated. This is done to many modern coins by various novelty companies. I did not suggest this in my original post because of the way you described the coin as looking like gold glitter. I assumed you meant just that - glitter. But if you refering to the way it shines - then perhaps if it was a plated coin and the plating is coming off - that could cause the same effect. But the coin is not gold and contains no gold. Whatever it is was done by someone else after the coin was minted. There were some solid gold Sacagawea coins minted though - back when the coin was first released. 12 of them were sent up on the Space Shuttle as part of the publicity campaign. But when the coins returned to earth they were kept under very strict security. They are curently being stored by the US Govt. at an undisclosed location.
