This Valerian I / River God Pyramos AE 20 coin is great addition to my 3rd Century collection. As I mostly have imperial issues this adds a welcome provincial dimension that I have been looking to expand on. At first look I thought it was an Alexandrian coin but its actually from Cilicia, Hieropolis-Castabala (Turkey). I believe it is a rarer to find type. Feel free to share anything you believe is relevant! Valerian I. CILICIA, Hieropolis-Castabala. AD 253-260. Æ 20mm (9.78 g). O: Laureate head right Rx: River-god Pyramos reclining right, holding branch and cornucopia. SNG Levante 1597
Great coin TJC, I happen to have a Valerian Mopsus with a River-god Pyramos on a bridge the Romans built.
Very cool bridge with river god Ancient Aussie!! In fact the more I am looking the more I am thinking i may need one of those too!
Nice Varerian @TJC ! Cool to find a rarer type ! I only have one of his as an AE Provincial, and I believe it is pretty common: RI Valerian I 253-260 CE AE 20mm Alexandria Troas mint Horse Grazing
