What do you guys think of the obverse and reverse? Would any of these marks scare you away (especially one on left side of Monticello)? Trying to figure out if I should upgrade.
The toning is completely natural. The marks under the 3rd column completely rule out FS. I think it is accurately graded at 66.
Actually I don't have this coin yet. A friend of mine sent it to me and said it is available. Just not sure about that mark on the Monticello...
Well, it is slabbed as FS. But thanks for the remarks. I kind of thought the same thing about whether or not it should be FS
66s have marks, that's why it's not a 67. If you like it go for it. You're never going to find large consensus opinions on moderns like you will with classic coins
I guarantee if you post a 63 Bust coin, you'll have guesses between EF and 66. Moderns are far easier to grade, because they are far more consistently made.
Perhaps I used a bit of hyperbole, but there's a grain of truth there. Their standards are universally more lax than NGC's. However, can you honestly argue that the OP's coin is FS, given that gigantic mark completely across the steps? That's not a FS coin.
I feel it is not full steps as well. The mark on the steps rules out full steps for me. This example is another reason to buy the coin, not the label.
Not FS. I can't even see 3 steps. I like the coin very much and the war nickel series. But don't pay 66 FS money for a 64 no FS coin.
Ok. I found this NGC example on ebay labeled as MS66FS. (I don't want to buy it, but just trying to compare to the original one I posted.) There is also a contact mark on the steps on this NGC one under the 4th column. Would this also not really be full steps?
That picture is too hard to judge from. However, the rule of thumb is - if a contact mark interrupts the step, it's not a full step. Same with bell lines on Franklins - if a contact mark interrupts the line, its not a full line.
The mark across the steps? From the photo it looks like a mark made post strike. If it is in fact a planchet flaw, and there is no damage. I agree with it's grade. It's a very nice looking Jefferson.
I don't see the coin upgrading, but it is nice looking in my opinion. I'm not convinced it's FS either. I would want to pay a decent amount less than 66FS for this if I were trying to pick it up. I'm also very, very picky and cost effective (read cheap).
