I found this coin the other day when I went ice skating. I have a small collection but i don't know anything about grading or values. So I'd like you guy's opinion. What do you think?

There's a little dirt or something along the edges. But I saw that they can run pretty expensive on ebay. If you guys can grade it or give me a value. Can you explain it a little? I don't know anything about this kinda thing and would like to.

    Cheers.

you found that on the ground! :eek:that is easily a $100 coin! if you can take some better pictures, we could make a better estimate on the grade.

Well what does that mean for the value? Can you explain the difference?

That identifies the mint that made the coin. CC is for Carson City (Nevada) while S is for San Francisco. It looks like an S on your coin. Look on the reverse just below the wreath for a letter.

CC's were typically produced in fairly low numbers. For example, there were 9,774,000 1878-S Morgan Dollars produced and only 2,212,000 1878-CC Morgans.

I agree with Cody, it is an S not a CC.

The rim looks to be raised a LITTLE too much. It might be a counterfeit.

Nice find on the ice !

Me thinks someone was using it to practice their hockey skills one day and lost it.

It should weigh 26.73 grams - many fakes are way light. Take it to a jeweler in a local mall and have them weigh it for you if you don't have a scale. Real or fake - you still cannot beat the price!

    Best Regards

    I suppose that could happen.

But under the wreath instead of an S or a CC it's a little square. Does that mean it's counterfeit for sure?

Take a clear picture of this area and post it. It may be a S that is filled or just worn that way or it could be a counterfit as Ben suggested. If you have another Morgan, compare the weight.

The little square could be an O, that's New Orleans mint, or a filled in S mint mark. Either way, it looks like a $15 to $20 coin to me.

    Great find!:smile

If it is a VAM-4, the CC would look like a real blocky.
VAM-4 has the C's close together with die chips in the center of each of them.

yep, an s. still worth $15-$20 like the above post said. but how often do you find a 129 year old coin on the ground?

There were no O Morgans in 1878 - just Phillies, S, and CC.
