I've seen the Black Book and really didn't like it as a guide for coins..I don't know about paper money--I'll check it out next time I'm at the book store.

I found the books by Snow in the ANA catolog Vol-1 1856-1858 and then Vol-2 1859-1896 for $24.95 each or both for $37.95
I'd really like the book from 1896-1909 but I don't see that one--since I don't collect too many ICH and when I did buy some they were later dates that were RED--that's why I'd like the book about 1896-1908 ;)

Well you two seem to agree on the paper money book so I'll keep that one in mind!!!

    Thanks again.

I collect small size currency, 1928 on, so I swear by the "Standard Guide To Small-Size US Paper Money by Oakes and Schwartz. A lot cheaper than Friedberg and the 5th edition just came out.

Thanks for the tip--I don't collect that much paper money but thought it would be good to have a book on hand.

If I do start to collect more the first set I would like to do is a date set of $1 silver certificates--1928-1957 I think.

The 28 to 57 silver certs are the first set I started to collect. It's a great set, only the 34 is a little pricy in Crisp Unc. The 28 C,D and E are ridiculous. After the blue seals, I ventured into red seals, star notes, war notes, experimentals, etc. Good Luck.

Well I thought I'd give an update on my collection.

I got the Complete Guide to Franklin Halves and just LOVE it!!
I have one more book coming in the mail.

If anybody likes Franklins I think you need the Complete Guide to Franklins Halves.

I haven't yet earned that doff of your cap. I am quite young as far as numismatists go (25) and am not yet at a financial point in my life where my collection is really valuable. I have been collecting halves for a little while now and my goal is to put together a collection of each date and mintmark of each US half issued for general circulation in well circulated condition. As I've worked my way back I've bought books for each set as I started working on it, so I am looking to start reading before I start owning. Actually, I'm still a ways from working on the bust halves yet as i'm just trying to finish the Barbers right now, but slowly I'm getting there. Its easier with the newer stuff as there are few counterfeit Kennedy, Franklin, or Barbers around and only slightly more counterfeit/altered Walkers out there, but now I need to do my reading to avoid problems as I get to the older and more valuable series. In all honesty, Overton's first edition would be adequate, but I'm a historian by education and I love reading, so I want the best/newest books available. Funny thing is that I collect books and condition is one of my greatest concerns, but in coins I like well circulated peices, go figure :) I will probobly get the Peterson book too, as I've heard the same thing from others that it is leaps and bounds beyond the Overton.

Sounds to me like you're going about it just right. I wish more people did this - it would save them a lot of money.

BTW, I collect books also and sometimes I get more into buying the books than the coins. When I first started collecting, there weren't this many available and now there's so much information on everything - isn't it great? :D

Sounds like me and you like the same things...Halves.
I have a set of Franklins--I'm working on a set of Kennedy from cir--have a set of WL started and would like to start on Barbers--Somebody once said that they hoped I got the 1892 MICO S..but to me that is a variety and it just doesn't go with my collection.

Someday I might try Bust and Seated halves but I think that this is about as far as I'll ever get.

As well as a lot of other collectors, some of whom have been waiting almost a year and a half since sending in their payment for it. :(

I tried to access the "Sneak Peek" area of the CPG site. Suppose to be for people who have prepaid for the book. The link to get an access code was broken, so I emailed JT to try to get a response. (and at least verify that my order was still on file.) Here is his reply.

    Hi Terry,

Thanks for your note. Yes, I do have your order and feel terrible it's been delayed so long.

The update on the web site should have been done a while back. But the friend who is doing this for me ran into some problems himself. The links for the access code and password should be working by tomorrow. Your info is immediately below. However, for a couple of weeks you won't need it to view the listings that are ready. ALL will be able to see them for a very short while. But as soon as I return from FUN more will be finished, and you'll then need the access code and password.

Please let me know if I can do anything else for you. I'll return from FUN Sunday evening, and leaving tonight.

    Access code: XXXXXXXXXX
    Password: XXXXXXXXXX

    Best wishes,

    JT

Thought this may be of interest to some of you.

Thanks for the link...I'm thinking about sending in and getting one before the release....I know it might not be this year but it might be cheaper.

The old saying goes....cold hands warm heart..since you have hot hands you must have a cold heart :D

    Just kidding.

Also the Catalogue of the World's Most popular Coins by Reinfeld
A book by Bower...and I thinking about getting his book on type coins...I can get it signed!!!
    Also
    The Complete Lincoln Cent Encyclopedia
also a few grading guides and things like that---
I hope this thread helps some "newer" members like it helped me the first time I read it!!!
