    Ask yourself...how could the mint do that...answer - it can't. Post-minting damage

My thought is it was a hand punched mm and totally misplaced by a new guy ! Lol. Seriously though I didn't see anywhere material was moved to make the raised area on the nose ! I really do ask myself those questions before a post! Thanks Kentucky for the quick response

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

The "D" is a trick of the mind. There really is no "D" there. Our brains are pre-wired to see familiar things where there are none - letters, faces, etc.

Yeah It doesn't seem like that was a regular error caused by a die error? Maybe people didn't like 1973's?

It’s just a few hits that pushed up the metal. When a coin has suffered a lot of PMD like this one, it’s almost a certainty that anything “Strange looking” is also PMD.

It’s great that you took the time to think through the minting and die making process. But don’t forget, the die is a negative relief of the coin. So, the nose would be in a recessed area and you just couldn’t get a punch in that small of a space without leaving other visible marks.
