So will somebody please tell me what this is on this coin. It was so hard to get a good picture so I really hope you all can see what I am seeing. Above the word America are bold lines or blocks running toward the center. They resemble the lines of the shield. I searched the internet for known errors on this coin and could not find one like this.

It's an interesting fact that you saw those as "bold lines or blocks running toward the center". In truth, they ran the other way, from the center toward the edge, during the strike. It is the result of a badly worn and about to fail reverse die. As a poor strike, it is not generally seen as a particularly collectible thing. Of course, the NEXT generation gets to determine that. What people think is worth keeping IS up to each generation, after all. Early U.S. collectors never considered mintmarks at all interesting.

I'm 62 and been at this hobby for over 54 years, and a coin like that would elicit just ONE reaction from me - yuck! I still prefer "my way" of looking at coins, but I don't get choose that for "the kids". Their hobby and mine might not bear ANY similarity. Yes, that makes me very sad, but it is what it's going to be.

Presently, I'm trying to use what I'm learning about these differences to plumb the psyches of millennials, and I wish the educational system at large could be sued for malfeasance, really I do.

Good luck with that last paragraph Kurt. I'm just glad my two boys were born in 79 & 82. At least they learned how to leave home at the right age. Although at my age now it would be nice for them to drop over and help me with the yard now and then. I got a year on you.

Pics are a little blurry when enlarged but either die deterioration or possible feeder finger scrapes.

At some point, you MAY need a "thick skin". If you can handle that, you'll thrive in this hobby.

Well, I appreciate all the help. If you all don't mind looking at my "wanna be collectables", I will keep posting pics and asking questions.

Parlay each new question and answer into a knowledge base that you can draw on and become able to answer your own new question from time to time, and you'll not ONLY please us, we MAY erect sculpture in your honor.

[Maybe not, but I used to be married to a Greek girl, so the cultures got mixed up.]

Hey Tommy, I'm a student of culture in general, and I think the recent educational "establishment" emphasis on treating EVERYTHING as equal to every other thing has warped the minds of our youth. Yes, they are the most empathetic people in history, and there's something to be said for that, but why did they have to ALSO drop the "em" and become the most "pathetic"?

I believe @mikediamond has a definition for this type of condition.
I do wonder though, if it has to do with the striking pressure being out of adjustment?

1st paragraph I actually sat up in my chair. Said, here is a guy that speaks at ANA conventions, I really want to know his opinion. Then, well, not all of us grew up on the streets of the NW. And most of us didn't have to carry a sock of nickels either.

Just to letting you know there are folks out there that collect LDS (late die state) coins. Just because they may be new to this, doesn't mean, that they are only in it for the money.

There will always be some sort of generational gap in this Hobby, and it is our duty to help further there education.

My only point is that, in this day and age the young collectors communicate this way, they use a device to help them. The older generations like to look someone in the eye, and it seems to be passing to the waste side. It used to be, the way you could tell if someone was "pulling your leg". But, that is not the way it is today, what you post is your character.
Your a Hard nosed individual (not a bad thing)
But, what a newbie, young or old hears, is Dissent.

I am passionate about this hobby. And, if we wish that it gets passed down to the future generations, we should be humble. To those who get to pass the torch. Just like everything that is raw, it needs to be refined to a pure content. Errors, Variety's, RPM's and Doubled Dies, may or may not be the wave of the future, But it IS the wave of this generation.

    My best regards,
    Phil

OK guys I've got one more I'm really curious about. He's quite handsome. Any info you can give me would be awesome! Under his eye and on his nose there is some extra metal, I think? Can't remember what the technical terminology is for that. Help there too please. Also some doubled dye maybe on the obverse and reverse. (did I spell dye correctly?) I really hope I am not sounding extremely under educated right now but, I am.

No.. it is not dye
The correct terminology is Die.. A Die is used to strike a Blank Planchet..
    This is a dye -

By the way, I'm not looking to make a quick buck. I am genuinely interested in the coins that I possess so that I may pass them down to my children. They are our next generation not me. I'm old! I inherited some coins that I know nothing about and I want to be able to give my children more information than I have. I too do not like getting my info from the internet. I decided to join Cointalk because this is as close to asking real people for answers as I am going to get. So thank you everyone who has answered my questions. You have all been very helpful. Oh and when you erect that Statue @V. Kurt Bellman, would you have it cast in bronze

Mmmmm, I dunno. Since I'm "Greek-inspired", my first impulse is marble, but I'll take the bronze thing under advisement.
