Can anyone tell me about this quarter? When you enlarge it you see this grey looking area around the coin but not on Washington's head.the pic doesn't show everything. Hold it in the light and the grey becomes a Golden hue. I would just like to know how this is possible and why it happened. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you
Sorry for: 1) The fact that I couldn't answer last night in the middle of the night on my own thread because I was asleep at 1-something AM. 2) The fact that the site's moderators decided to shut down my thread for a reason I cannot fathom. 3) This is typical CoinTalk site management. Now, you're right, I'm having trouble seeing what you mean - you're spot on about that.
Did you see the pic of the quarter? What do you think about it? It's not a doubled die. I do not know if this is considered an error or not. It's just strange how it looks.the back of the coin is the same way. It's a mystery I would like to solve. I have yet to see another one like it. I would like to share it with others and get their opinion on the matter. Thank You for your response.
My opinion of this kind of material is presently in flux. On one hand, every old-school numismatist I've ever known would dismiss this out of hand and derisively toss it back onto the counter at you. ON THE OTHER HAND, this IS a hobby with a history of cataclysmic changes of emphasis and tastes, too. Is this one such turning point? How can we tell from where we are right now? Aren't you impressed that you MAY BE written of someday as one of the people that changed this hobby? How "meta" is that? Here's literal truth - there was once a time when almost no collectors took notice of mintmarks. I PERSONALLY REMEMBER a time when ALL toning was considered a detriment and LOWERED the value of coins. (Half the CT members who read this just fainted dead away.) Ultimately, while almost no numismatists TODAY might care about your piece, the hobby may have turned on its head someday and you'll be in the "cat bird seat" from having saved this'n.
The appearance of coins can be affected by so many factors, it is well nigh impossible to tell what might have happened to give it this color. To be honest, just sounds like some toning.
