I just came across this somewhat surprising article on the web when doing a google search. Apparently in 2009 a guy with a metal detector found a 24 miliaresia piece of Valentinian on the side of the road in, of all places, Beverly Hills. Does anyone remember this coin or have any info to add? http://paul-barford.blogspot.com/2009/05/controversial-coin-from-california.html
Barford is quite notorious (so much so that he is usually referred to as 'Barf-ford' with much derision. I would not believe anything on his blog whatsoever. Is there any truth anywhere in the blog entry? Perhaps. He often takes one tiny kernel of truth and expands it to his fiction. He is rabidly anti-collecting.
This is a parody. The real press release for this coin can be found at http://www.coinlink.com/News/ancien...argest-silver-coin-known-of-the-roman-empire/ When you pronounce the name "Phil E. Stein", it sounds like "philistine". This coin realized $345,000 plus juice.
I saw a similar “coin” in the Leiden museum, but the design was engraved. I was hoping to get some info about it as well.
I would agree with that, but in both cases people seem to honestly believe such trash (not knowing any different).
Found this video on his blog about an Israeli minister using an ancient coin- probably first revolt Judean prutah as proof that Jewish homeland is thousands of years old. The "Barf" guy seems to have a problem with some Jewish issues although he claims to not be anti-semitic( I have heard that before). Anyway the video is interesting, here is the link- it is short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=50&v=OmG_MaH1NGA I was just curious why someone would be anti ancient coin collecting so checked out his blog. Some folks have their own crazy little gripes about the world. absurd to say the least! @Deacon Ray - fyi Here is my prutah of the revolt JUDAEA, FIRST REVOLT, AE19MM PRUTAH. YEAR 2 = 67-68/IRREGULAR TYPE! EB928 Just love these coins amphora/grape leaf
Thanks for this, Mike! Nice coin! These are among my favorite of Judaean coins. They are sometimes marketed as "Masada coins". (The pottery shards, spearpoint, and background are PhotoShopped and are not mine.)
