Old Provincial Pieces, that is. And not really, I'm throwing in a denarius too because I don't want to a) create another thread and bore everyone to death and b) ruin my pun. Bought some interesting coins recently for a reasonable price. I am starting to have a better understanding of Septimius Severus' provincial pieces as well as the magistrates who were stationed there. Makes the whole area a lot more fun to deal with when I am not finding denarii to buy. The patina on this coin is a nice glossy black with a light tint of green that only comes out and makes the coin look ugly when I want to photograph it and share it with you. Grrr. Nothing earth-shattering, but still a nice milestone. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6295 Post anything you recently bought that excited you!
Yeah you know me! SS, Anchialus Thrace! Not a recent purchase, but I was very excited about picking this one up...still a fav!
Glossy black patinas are the devil to photograph! I haven't managed to get a decent shot of this one yet. SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS AE28. 15.93g, 27.8mm. THRACE, Philippopolis, AD 196-198. T. Statilius Barbarus, legate. Varbanov III 1169 (R5-scarce). O: AV• K •Λ• C• - CEVHPOC • Π , Laureate draped and cuirassed bust. I missed out on an example of this next coin sometime last year, but was really excited when I managed to nab another one that came up for auction just a few weeks later, and for a more affordable price. SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS AE29. 12.6g, 28.8mm. MOESIA INFEROR, Nicopolis ad Istrum, circa AD 210-211. Flavius Ulpianus, legate. Varbanov 2795; AMNG 1339; Price/Trell Fig. 26. I don’t have these in hand yet, just won them Tuesday from Agora but they’re provincial and I’m excited about them. Bithynia, Uncertain. Trajan. A.D. 98-117. AE 22 (22.80 mm, 6.53 g, 6 h). Laureate head of Trajan right / Eagle on globe. RPC 1152. Ex Frank Kovacs. Mysia, Syria or Cyprus, Ephesus, Pergamum, Antioch or Paphos(?). Augustus. 27 B.C.-A.D. 14 AE 27 dupondius (26.5 mm, 13.01 g, 1 h). struck ca. 25 B.C. AVGVSTVS, name clockwise behind bare head of Augustus right, all within dotted border / large CA within rostral wreath (ships' beaks and laurel-branches) between dotted inner and outer borders; between wreath ties, a large pellet. RPC 2234; BMC 721; Howgego 2b. VF / Good VF, toned brass highlights on devices and dark green patina in fields. There is no universal agreement as to which of several important cities coins of this nature belong. Ephesus, Pergamum, Antioch and Cyprus (among others) have been plausibly proposed but none is fully supported. The exact meaning of "CA" is also at issue with many interpretations offered. Caesar Augustus and Commune Asiae are among the more plausible interpretations.
@chrsmat71 Lol, the early 90’s. Great eagle. I’m hooked on these big bronzes now and want all of the eagle stances. @zumbly Im super jealous of those two coins. I like the river god coins throughout the empire and in other cultures. The fact that it is from Philippopolis makes it more desirable to me because I love how the city name looks in Greek. The temple issue from Nikopolis is also great. I’ve seen them but never at a price I have wanted to pay. @H8_modern Those are great coins and the first I am learning about them. I’m glad you shared them! @Mat Thanks pal.
My Liber (Bacchus) coin of Faustinianus lacks the double N. It would require more searching to say if yours is an error or a variety.

Nice Severans with the glossy black patina. Found this Severan provincial several weeks ago like that: Tarsus, Cilicia. Caracalla. 198-217. Tetrassarion c. 214-217.
