Can anybody read the date on this penny? It looks to me like 1909 but not sure. It's in very poor condition.

Hi Sarah and welcome to CT. I can't even guess on the date but an image of the reverse of the coin might help narrow it down.

I would almost say it's a 1909 but try for a reverse shot to see more of the coin.

I wish I could be more helpful, but I simply cannot see or identify enough to say either way.

If you load the photos into an editing program and play with the different options, sometimes it can bring out details not clear to the naked eye and/or in an as-taken photo, but I'm not sure if it would be sufficient in this case.

Still, welcome to the forum, Sarah. :)

    Not really :yack:
Your Cent is severely damaged. No point in trying to determine the correct date.

    Peace :angelic:

I agree with Dean. Kinda looks like a 1909.. but i really couldn't say for sure without having it in hand.

I still can't do much with it, but still....

I used to know a fellow of very modest means who would seek out coins such as this in the different series he collected, and for the purpose of filling holes he couldn't otherwise afford. He would have used something like this to fill the S VDB space and really, what's the harm? No one was going to be misled into believing or later buying it, and such coins allowed him say he had a "complete set" all with a wink and a smile.

The point is that if you want to call it an 09, I see no harm in it even if we cannot positively identify it as truly being one.

The last two digits are too damaged to be sure. A local coin dealer may be able to help read it but doubtful.
