Probably not. I haven't sent anything to CAC since October. Wasted too much money with him last year and all I got for my trouble was a mug for Christmas. IMO, the fellows over there at CAC are more inconsistent than PCGS and NGC.
Most of my old bust and capped bust pieces had been cleaned many many decades ago. No mention was made on the few pieces I had graded. I believe it’s worth grading.
It has certainly been cleaned, but may be "market acceptable" as it doesn't look hairlined from the photos. technically 45-50? The dings are well hidden and shouldn't impact gradability.
I'd leave her 'unholdered' as I don't think she would straight (strait?) grade. Close call. Keep the babe raw. She looks better without a jacket.....
Your first two pictures don't show the surfaces very well. There appears to be very minimal wear. The next set of pictures don't show the entire coin, but show incredible detail and it appears to be an XF coin. I too believe there was an old cleaning. Getting it graded would purely be your decision. Are you keeping it? Using it for a registry set? Wanting to sell it?
It most likely has been dipped or improperly cleaned at some point in the past 160+ years, but it doesn’t look too bad. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it in a straight graded holder or a details holder to be completely honest.
Agree totally. Though it has no toning an the surfaces they like lately. They seem to straight grade anything lighter gray even if it’s had an old cleaning and anything dark crusty or with nice color that napalm. And yes they’re always a grade low. Lot of xf 45 and au 58 lately everything I send that has good surfaces and appeal almost always goes green cac for me too
Thanks for the responses and advice, everyone. I did a sort of a tally of the responses and, given some interpretive license, this is how I see the results: Straight Grade? No: 4 Maybe: 4 Yes: 5 One or two of the "yeses" may actually be "maybes," so perhaps 4,5,4 sounds more appropriate. In any case, that's quite a draw. My only plan for the coin was to add it to a graded type set. If it could grade at least AU I'd likely include it in that set. Anything lower and I really don't consider it worth grading and I would just keep the lady loose and free. Given the uncertainty of the results, I'm leaning towards not grading it and instead looking for a more solid example of a seated quarter. So there it is.
More than 13 states during the civil war 1861. 13 Stars refer to the original 13 colonies who revolted from England to form the United States.
The only one worse than that is G.R. Tiso. A completely made up grading system that includes all sorts of letters you have to decipher plus +++/--- symbols for each letter. Not downing the guy, he's been in business for over 40 years but what a real pain to figure out. I gave up.
