I found this 1991 D penny, it has doubling or off set strike on rim, some slight doubling in date and in the G and O, but my big question is the inverted 2 on the right above the date? Andvis this a coin that I should have examined is it of value in your opinion?
It is a Misaligned Die Strike. Common. Nothing major. Worth 1 Cent. The doubling is due to Die Deterioration. Nothing to do with a true Doubled Die. The inverted 2 is a plating issue or stain.
As mentioned above, a minor Mis-aligned obv. die, and numismatic pareidolia is the cause of the "2" (which is, as also mentioned, a stain/discoloration)
I have to add a correction. It may be a misaligned die if only the obverse is affected and not centered. Since there is no picture of the reverse, it could be an off-center strike. You cannot determine MAD by one side only. Both sides would have to be affected in corresponding directions for it to be off-center.
Yes you can.. If you look at the left side of the Cent you can see a false double rim. Also the has to be a some of the lettering missing to then be considered an Off Center. I have been collecting MAD coins for about 31 years now You can also have both sides Misaligned though rare.
Yes, the "double rim" is caused by the obverse die being misaligned compared to the planchet. What does the reverse look like? Does it have a misalignment that corresponds in a planar fashion to the reverse example? Wait, there is no reverse comparison. You do need that to determine MAD vs. Off-Center.
So...you don't have any explanation. I am a New Member here, but that doesn't mean that I am a newb. If you have something to explain as to how you can tell MAD from Off-Center by viewing only one side of a coin, I would like to know and it would be beneficial for many. I bet you do have further comments.
Hi, I would like to first introduce myself. I'm JustCallMeKurly and yes it's the hole thing. Lol or kurlylicious which ever suits your fancy. And let me start off by saying yes I am a noob and Not Embarrassed of it. So I have a lot of questions and there's only so much I can find in the internet. So I would be very grateful and much appreciated if I can get as many opinions on this as possible. I have found a penny with the roof floating and a nickel that has only a partial of the back it has some scratches but fairly very smooth and lastly I just found a 1991 D penny with the last 1 of the date a little higher and a slight tilt towards the left. Are any of these coins worth anything? Please and thank you.
Damaged. Took a hit. Worth? 1 Cent Also.. start your own separate unique thread. Pictures are always a must!
