A New Product: Coin Type Sheets

I just ran across this product on eBay and thought it was interesting--especially for novice collectors. Someone has put together type sheets for common Roman coin series, such as Constantine's Sol Invictus coins, or Fel Temps, etc. I suppose you affix the coin flip to the sheet, or maybe you overlay a clear flip binder sheet in such a way that the coins match up to the squares?

One of the intimidating factors facing the beginning collector is how to start given the mind-numbing varieties of ancients. Some are content to collect whatever from wherever. Those wanting a little more focus could use these sheets to pursue inexpensive "mini-sets" pretty quickly. I myself like seeing all the types or mints in one place.

I have just reviewed the copy of a few of these sheets, and there are a few idiosyncrasies. The creator of these sheets, for example, refers to the Sun god on Constantine's coins as "SOLI INVICTUS" rather than "SOL INVICTUS," misunderstanding that soli is the dative form of the name. And the creator describes the "barbarian and hut centenionalis" as a Roman emperor leading a barbarian from a burning hut. I've pretty much read everything there is to read on this type, and I've never seen the hut described as "burning."

But perhaps these are quibbles. I do like the idea, and I think it can be a service to those looking for a way to focus their collecting.

BTW, I have no connection to or even idea of who is behind this product. It might even be someone here on CoinTalk.

Ken Dorney Yea, I'm Cool That Way...

I dont like them. Chintzy and geared towards someone who will only own one or two coins. If you look closely he shows these sheets laminated and the coins stapled to the sheets. An ugly presentation.

I wondered how the spacing was designed to work. I use trays, not binders, so I assumed somehow standard binder pages would overlay the sheet. With the stapled flip, maybe not.

I like the idea. While it is probably geared towards someone who is a new collector or doesn't plan on having a large collection, it's great for that. It makes it more accessible, more like modern collecting. And even for someone with a larger collection, it wouldn't be a bad way to handle a particular series of coins, especially if it was polished up a bit more.

I like the concept of having an artistic display for coins, with detailed information/historical photos but I haven't seen anything id like to copy or buy yet. Kinda ruined it here for me with his stamp and facebook info...

Interesting but not for me, even though I'm new at ancients. I buy what I like and go from there as my collection grows and I can research using other methods.

    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

They look nice, reminds me of the digital backgrounds @Deacon Ray makes for his coins! Maybe nice to make a little frame and display few coins?. I thought about making something like printed on high quality card stock that but realized I would be the only one looking at it, so opted not to do it.

I don't like the "stapled in" coins however...:stop: I'm sure you could mount you coins in there some other way.
