A Fake Coin In A CNG Auction

    This auction contains a fake California Gold piece. The genuine ones never ad a bear on them and would state a denomination (1/2 of what in this case).

    WORLD. Miscellaneous. Lot of four (4) AV denominations. All coins: Minor denominations with an example each from medieval India, Mexico, South Africa, and a piece of California gold. Coins VF to Proof. LOT SOLD AS IS, NO RETURNS. Four (4) coins in lot.

    Have you emailed your thoughts to CNG? Better to contact them so they can withdraw the lot, if fake, than to post it here.

    The ones with the bear are usually plated. Some go back to the 30's, but this type is quite recent. Could be actual gold, who knows? The description doesn't make any assurances and most people know that group lots are 'buyer beware'.
