Just went to the ATM at my bank and just went in to say hi got any spare nickels or cent rolls. Next thing I know I have 30.00 in Nickels 10.00 in cents and she offered me dimes so I got 40.00 of them. Any one have any luck with dime rolls? I think I'm going to give my 2 favorite tellers a Gift cert. for xmas. They have been nice all year
If having to deal with the tellers upsets you, move to Japan. Coins are often distributed through machines that operate similarly to ATMs, in the bank lobbies.
That's the most intelligent answer I've seen. But Carl, I don't think half the people here get it. They think coins are only for (1) spending or (2) collecting. You've discovered a third use for them.
Oh believe me I did see the manager. He even showed me his IKE collection taken from circulation finds at his bank, but 10 rolls were still the limit. He supported his teller 100%. I never went back.
Just tell them that your doing a science experement. Taking 1 coin from each end of the roll swallowing them and check to see if they are heads or tails and then hand her several rolls for trade. :goofer: John
90% of the time the tellers are friendly or at least neutral (in my experience) but I do get the occasional sigh or dirty look from the lazy one’s, usually the younger female tellers, the males never seem to have a problem with it. Just Carl is right, most of the time the questions are just an attempt to make small talk and I have learned to indulge them So as to build a relationship which may pay off on future visits to that bank.
Wow, some hostility against bank tellers here...I hope you guys don't come into the bank I work at. From what I have seen, we don't typically get collectors to come in and ask for rolls or anything...but if they did we would give them to them. I think when tellers ask questions like "what do you need them for?" they are typically (not always) just trying to make conversation. Thats why I would ask (being a fellow coin collector). However, banks are limited to what coin they have in stock at a given time and they need it to fill business orders. So, if you plan on taking a large amount of coin from a bank at once...expect questions (or you may not get them simply because of supply). If they are short on coin at the time and you want a lot and they know you are a collector...you may have to wait for the next order or you could request they order a certain amount for you specifically. But, if your only asking for a roll or 2...I wouldn't think it would be a problem unless they are seriously short (for example, we ran out of quarters early on Wednesday and our order didn't come in until Friday).
Regardless a simple polite request for $5 in cent rolls shouldn't provoke a ****y atitude, 90% of the tellers are friendly or at least neutral, that’s all we ask.
i don't see the point to bank tellers being crabby. its their job to do this, they get paid don't they?
Well, its like any other boring public job...I looked at your profile Coinlover and see that your only 15. I assume you haven't had much work experience yet but when you do your first couple jobs will probably be similar. When you deal with 200+ people a day...half of whom are rude or disgusting, you can be kind of grouchy. Yes, its the job. Also, its a job that doesn't require any real skill and therefore almost anyone can do it. So, you might not get the best people either. That being said, I don't think there is a teller I work with (well maybe one) who isn't smart, friendly, and wants to help people. Many tellers are like me, people who are either in school or working on getting into school so they can move on into their careers. I can understand someone getting crabby if someone walks in off the streets and expects to get a $25 box of cents out of the blue. The bank needs the coin to run and you only order what you expect to need. So, when you get someone requesting large amounts of coin who doesn't "need" them...I can understand why the bank might be crabby. I think a teller needs to be 50% concerned with making the customer happy and 50% concerned with helping the bank run. If you give out all the coin without any concern about filling business coin orders...you make key business customers unhappy (which, I'm sorry to say is more important to the bank than the average personal account...who might be a coin collector) and the bank doesn't run well because of the coin shortage. Now, that being said...I think most bank tellers (myself included) would try and accommodate someone who wants to search through rolls (especially if its a customer). But, you have to remember that the bank has a limited supply and if you want a large number at one time...you might want to let them know when they are ordering so they can be ready for it. Try and put yourself in their shoes.
If I had an employee of mine treated someone coming into my business with anything but respect, they would be gone. Banks are no different. And I've been successful in mine for 45 years. I had a teller at my local bank treat me poorly during a purchase of some of the new dollars. She just acted like I was bothering her. My business walked out the door.
I only had a problem once trying to get $20 in cents. To which i replied "OK, get a manager i want to close all my accounts here" Once i threw that out there i never had a problem since. Good thing too because i really didn't want them to call me on my bluff. I really onlt take $20 in cents every couple months. Not like i ask for much.
