I recently purchased this ANTONINUS PIUS - SENATUS CONSULTUM. 140/4 AD. 23mm, 7.4g, Ancient Roman Coin which was attributed as Antioch BMC 319, and described as Ancient Bronze Coin of ANTONINUS PIUS. 138-161 A.D. This coin pictured struck 140-144 A.D. at Antioch ad Orontem mintin ancient Syria while under Roman control. 7.4 grams. 23 mm maximum diameter. Obverse; AVT KAI T AIΛ AΔΡ ANTΩNINOC (or similar), laureate head right Reverse; large S.C. within a large laurel wreath, B= year 2 below. but because of the 'dot' between the 'S' and the 'C' I believe that an attribution of Antioch 313 might be more accurate. (RIC hasn't been able to help me much.) May I have your opinions on the attribution, please?
Pretty much right, though it would not be in RIC. Also, what 'Antioch 313' do you refer to? Assuming the obverse legend would match, it would be McAlee555b and BMC307.
@Ken Dorney Thank you. Per 'Wildwinds' (the only reference I found.) Note: Officina letter on 'Wildwinds" is Epsilon. I couldn't find a refernce to BMC307.
Try acsearch, using simple strings: pius antioch wreath b. It turns out a plethora of possibilities: https://www.acsearch.info/search.ht...s=1¤cy=usd&thesaurus=1&order=0&company= Ken
No problemo. These can be a tad difficult, especially as there is a hoard out right now with some new varieties. Some can also be found in RPC Online: http://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/
